BEIJING (AFP) - Huge swarms of locusts have destroyed summer crops in northern and eastern China, forcing officials to take urgent measures to fight the plague, state media reported.
Some one million hectares (2.47 million acres) of farmland in Inner Mongolia has been hit by massive infestations since late May, said Xinhua news agency.
Drought in the region during May and June led to a shortage of natural food for locusts such as weeds and reeds, forcing the insects to turn to crops instead, it said.
More huge swarms are rapidly chewing their way through summer crops on 12,000 hectares in the northern province of Hebei and officials have resorted to aerial spraying to destroy the insects, it said.
The eastern province of Shandong province has infestations covering 266,800 hectares of wasteland and has mobilized thousands of pest control specialists to prevent the insects from moving onto farmland.
The Ministry of Agriculture had earlier warned that some two million hectares of farmland and 25 million hectares of grassland would be attacked by locusts this year.

So what's next, the Rain of Frogs or the Rivers Turned to Blood? Anyone have their copy of Exodus handy?
I'm just glad the SCOTUS voted 7-2 last year to ban biblical plagues here.
God is punishing China for being communist.
The writer obviously does not know how locust plagues occur. If it were just locusts finding food crops, plagues would be rampant everywhere. There are obviously other factors and they are not mentioned here as they should be.
