NJ is the garbage state, I mean the garden state, keep your cigarette ashes
the heck out of here </sarcasm> If it were a whole butt, the summons would be justified; they do add up.
Meanwhile, while driving down I-80 you're doing 75 mph and people are still tailgating you, then you have those who weave in and out of lanes cutting you off, speeding, DWI and many throwing out real garbage out the windows.
And don't forget those running drugs and guns, oh that's right, the troopers aren't allowed to pull them over anymore due to racial profiling. Maybe this trooper was justified after all. What's more dangerous than an ash causing a fire?

The cop had to pull him over. We all know there isn't any real crime in NJ.

I'd love to see every doofus who throws a cigarette butt out the window get a ticket. Try walking along any stretch of road some day and counting the cigarette butts. They're everywhere.

As a biker who has been hit by a number of burning cigarette butts flicked out the window by the drivers in front of me, I hope they throw the book at this guy. The front of the building I work in is covered with hundreds (thousands?) of butts left by smokers. They think the world is their ashtray. It's time to put an end to it.

Considering this is nothing but words on a ticket vs the story of the accused, I think I'll wait for the trial on this one...

I'm sorry for the guy but I agree with the State Trooper on this one many brush fires start along the edges of highways where lazy people would rather throw a cigarette out of their vehicles window than dirty their ashtray.
It's very important especially during dry periods like the North Eastern U.S. has just gone through.

Go to court and ask to see the evidence. No ash, no crime.

I once read a story about someone who flicked a cigarette out of a car window, and it ended up in another car in the drivers lap!! OUCH!

Is cigarette ash biodegradable? If so, how it that littering? People throw food out of their cars.

I'm kind of mixed on this.
True story: A friend of mine was driving down the street and the driver in the car in front of him flicked his lit cigarette out the window and it went right through the hood opening and onto the engine.
Needless to say my friend panicked, thinking that the engine could catch fire, and made an abrupt stop, causing the semi behind him to jack-knife. Luckily, there were no other cars on the road.
I know it's only ashes, but couldn't the guy buy a cheap ashtray, or put the ashes into an empty soda can or something instead of flicking it out the window?

Well, there's a reason they call it an "ash tray". I get sick of smokers using the rest of the world as their personal ash tray. Smoke if you want to, but have some courtesy and keep your butts to yourself. I especially hate it during the periods when the fire danger is high. Come on smokers, you don't have many people who will defend you anymore, you shouldn't give them more reasons to come down on you.

If the guy who flicked the ash had been an illegal alien....er...temporary guest smoker...this never would have happened. He would have been sent on his merry way. He would have been flicking ashes Americans won't flick.

Folks, it was just ASH. Not the cigarette butt.
Biodegradable, and there's no way any judge is going to uphold the fine. It will be dismissed. More debris is left from your tires as they speed along the freeway than the flick from a lit cigarette..

If he threw a lit cigarette out the window he deserves the ticket, but if it is just ashes - BS.
I'm a smoker and will not tolerate tossing cigarettes out the window.......I have stopped my car and made a passenger get out and pick up the butt they had just tossed out the window.
