STUART, Fla. -- Hyperactive like the rest of her breed, the Jack Russell terrier named Kaylee would chase anything thrown her way. And to the horror of adults and children at a family July 4th picnic, she did just that when a powerful firecracker was thrown into her yard. She chased it down and was killed outright when it went off. "I lost a family member," Joseph P. Kolinoski, 26, wrote in a statement to a Martin County Sheriff's Deputy.
Kolinoski said the family was celebrating in their yard when his wife's uncle drove by and threw the powerful firecracker at about 5:30 p.m. "He wasn't even invited," Kolinoski said of the uncle. He said the 3-year-old, 8-pound dog was buried shortly afterward. "They're hyper dogs; they think everything's a toy," he told The Stuart News. Sgt. Jenell Atlas, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said the firecracker was not illegal and there was no evidence of malice against the dog.

Restraint is appreciated. But I'm guessing it won't be long before someone comes along and shows less restraint than either of us...

He should've beat the uncle with the bloody puppy corpse (isn't that the name of a heavy metal band?).

I'm sorry about the dog, but at least a child didn't pick up the firecracker.

"I lost a family member," Joseph P. Kolinoski, 26, wrote in a statement to a Martin County Sheriff's Deputy. No, you didn't; you lost a pet. I'm sorry this happened, but a dog is an animal. I am fond of dogs, too, but this elevating them to the status of people is just loony.

3 years old and only 8 pounds? She was tiny. I have a 3 month old JR and she chases red wasps that come up out of the grass. I hope she never catches one. A sting in the mouth would be serious.

"Kolinoski said the family was celebrating in their yard when his wife's uncle drove by and threw the powerful firecracker at about 5:30 p.m.
"He wasn't even invited," Kolinoski said of the uncle."
I get the feeling Mr. Uncle is now permanently persona non grata.

wife's uncle drove by and threw the powerful firecracker at about 5:30 p.m. "He wasn't even invited," There is some clear negligence here. It could have been a child to pick it up or be near it when it landed.
Uncle sounds like a dumbass.

Now if only the uncle had rec'd a formal invitation, I'm sure this wouldn't have happened.
