One of the Youngest Catholic Cardinals Excommunicates Woman Who Claims to be a Priest

LYON, France, July 5, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A French Cardinal has excommunicated a Catholic woman claiming she was "ordained" as a priest by three women who call themselves Roman Catholic bishops.  For those supposing the next generation of church leaders will turn the church even more politically correct, the action by one of the Church's youngest Cardinals will come as a shocker.  Lyon's Cardinal Archbishop Philippe Barbarin, 55, has followed in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI.  Cardinal Barbarin excommunicated the woman who went through a false 'ordination' yesterday.  Pope Benedict XVI, acting in 2002 as Cardinal Ratzinger, officially excommunicated two of the women "bishops" who performed the ceremony.

Cardinal BarbarinGenevieve Beney, a 56-year-old married physical education teacher and mother of two, was "ordained" Saturday on a boat on the Saone River near the eastern French city, by self-proclaimed "bishops" from the dissident movement Women's Ordination Worldwide as 60 activists who support female ordination looked on.

"This is not a rupture with the Roman Catholic Church," Beney claimed before the ceremony. "If there is a rupture on my part, it is with a situation that I consider to be obsolete and unjust to women."

"This act . . . does not fulfil any of the conditions required by the Catholic Church, and such a ceremony unequivocally constitutes a serious act of rupture with the Catholic Church," Lyon's Cardinal Barbarin corrected in a statement, according to a Reuters report. "There will be no truth to the words that will be pronounced," Barbarin said before the ceremony. "For many Catholics, this will be a source of useless injury and suffering."

Nine women activists, eight American and one Canadian, have announced that on July 25 they will conduct their own "ordination" ceremony on a boat on the St. Lawrence River. When LifeSiteNews.com contacted the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops about the impending "ordination" of the Canadian woman later this month, a spokesman there, unlike Cardinal Barbarin, said the CCCB had "no comment" and no plans in place, at least that the CCCB was willing to disclose, as to how they would respond to such an event.

He was wrong to generalize it. But it's fair to say that there are a few bad apples that have brought this scandal on the church because they clearly didn't think the problem with pedophiles was bad enough to do something about.

A woman gives life directly. Her primary relationship in life is to her child, and not to her husband.

It is the man whose life is an imitation of Jesus. He sacrifices all he has, all that he is for his wife.

The mass is a wedding feast between the Church and Christ. The priest stands in the place of Christ, the groom, who sacrifices for his bride. It is the role of men to toil, labor, fight and die for their loved ones. (Notice, however, that this leaves the congregant in the place of the feminine, a position which is very emasculating to male worshippers. That is why it is so destructive to the church that the centrality of the sacrifice -- which enables men to turn around, assume the place of the preist and thus be masculine -- has been lost to some extent; and why Mel Gibson is so admired for restoring a sense of that masculinity through the Passion of the Christ. In the mass, all offer their lives for their wives, taking the place of Christ, and maintaining their masculine role through their identification with the priest.)

A bride in the place of the groom turns the symbolism of the wedding feast upside down. Should be congregation sacrifice for the priestess?

What's more, the symolism of the mass becomes very perverse in the case of a priestess. When a man offers his body, it is obvious that this is meant in the willingness to die, and that the food which is offered is in the Eucharist. What does it say when a woman, whose breasts exist to suckle babies, offers, "this is my body. Take and eat of it."?

Did you try looking up the New Testiment Priesthood in the bible? It's right there by the pope stuff. {snicker}

It's not in my Bible. I'll stop by one of the local warehouse churches that has popped up in my neighborhood in the last week and pick up the latest revised edition, though I do get nervous around those snakes. {snicker, snicker}

What's more, the Church has clearly stated she does not have the RIGHT to ordain women. There's a lot of gravity with that word. It's not a restriction based on opinion. It's a restriction based on fact. Similarly, the Church would say they do not have the RIGHT to declare that man and woman were created simultaneously, which many feminists would love to champion.

You're right. But look what I found!

"And the Lord said to Peter, 'Divide my Church 20,000 times'".

"And thus Jesus spoke: 'Blessed are the disobedient. For their ignorance of history will bring laughter to many.'"

Exactly right. Good observation. What the heck does age have to do with the decision??? If it were an older Cardinal would the heading be "Old man Catholic Cardinal....etc.?" I hate the way journalists write anymore. It was my profession years ago and I am ashamed at how unprofessional it has become.

Please re-read your catechisms, you all flunk!

...of course Mother Superiors in a convent has heard "confessions" (though she can not grant absolution, which I never claimed). She can also, as a lay minister, distribute the Eucharist which has been "blessed" by a priest (this is done all the time in convents, check it out). And she, under extreme circumstances, perform baptism and last rites...THIS IS ALL THAT I CLAIMED.

Now, before you each walk lock-step with the current dictates of the Roman faith, please note that until the Dark Ages of history priests as well as bishops were allowed to marry (still a tradition in the Eastern Rite). Also, there are currently more than 100 priests on duty today in the church who are married (the majority are converted Anglican/Episcopal ministers).

Also note that the Ghostic Gospels contain the Gospel of Mary (and it considers her one of the Apostles; SHE was, after all, the first that the risen Christ appeared to at the tomb).

Yeah, isn't that the "gospel" that also asserts that women must become men to get into heaven. Gee, that sure affirms the status of women. /sarc

A bartender can hear "confessions" too. So what the hell is your point, genius?

To say someone can hear confessions, they just can't grant absolutions is ridiculous. Absolution is the point of going to confession.

Your comments about married priests are completely irrelevant to the issue being discussed.

And do try to read the gnostic gospels before you cite them. I don't mean to just verify your citation. I mean actually read them. They are so preposterously non-Christian as to be in many places quite comical. Tom Cruise would giggle at some of their beliefs. Leading celibate, ascetic, segregated, communal lives, they believed that sexuality was a mask alien to the human soul. They espoused sexual equality easily for the sole reason that the sexes had no relationship to each other at all.

women should not be priests

I know this is picky--but women CAN NOT be priests. There's no 'should' about it.

The most significant argument(s) are: 1) since a priest is "alter Christi," the priest must be modeled on Christ, Who was a man, and 2) Tradition, beginning with no less than Christ Himself, who left no "ordained" women.

But in addition, you will find NO 'female' priests in the OT--thus the tradition of Melchisidec is also called into play.

I, too, have children and not all of them can be "convinced" of all the truths of Catholicism.

As long as you did your best to educate them, it is now THEIR problem (and St. Monica's, whom we all invoke...)

Such a thing--to refer to the Church of the Eternal FeelGood as a "warehouse."

FeelGood was the patron saint of Democrats such as Joe Biden.

Whassamatta you?

There is no RC on this thread that has ANY interest in the Gnostic "Gospels," (even those written by you,) nor in your interpretation of the term "hear Confessions" (an interpretation which is analogous to the SCOTUS' majority interpretation of the words "public purpose" in Kelo); nor your gratuitous and ill-informed use of the term "Dark Ages," in which, btw, you live at this very point in time.

Scram.

What I don't understand.....are these women saying that there is no fufilling work for women within the Catholic Church because they can't say mass? That they can't make a difference? They can't influence people??

Blessed Mother Teresa didn't make a difference, or partake in fufilling work? Nor was she influential?

What about the numerous ordained nuns performing missionary work, educating young people as teachers, school administrators, administrators of small churches without regular pastors?

For that matter, what about the thousands upon thousands of women who aren't even ordained? Lay people working in ministry as well as teachers at Catholic elementary and high schools and universities? Not doing meaningful work? Not influential???

There would be no church if it weren't for all the women handling all the responsibilities I've just mentioned. Why is this one issue such a big deal?

Women

The archdiocese of Los Angeles is a travesty, thanks to Cardinal Mahoney.

I never thought I'd find myself defending Mahony but ... it is NOT his fault! He is one of Jadot's men (I live in a diocese run by another one of them). They are fulfilling the purpose for which they were chosen for their assignments.

That said, don't be surprised if at some time soon, Cardinal Mahony isn't 'elevated' to a desk position somewhere in the Vatican.

What's the point of confession, if no absolution? My cousin Mary could hear your 'confession' in that case. And my cousin Mary could also perform a baptism in an emergency. And my cousin Mary is a lapsed Quaker.

Nobody flunked but you. "THIS IS ALL I CLAIMED" . . . you say, but your supposed point was that the "Mother Superior" was already doing most of the stuff that priests do, so why couldn't she be a priest?

So either you were wrong, or you were being deliberately dishonest in order to argue your point that women should be priests.

BTW, the Gnostic "Gospels" are not only non-Catholic, they're non-Christian. You ought to read them before you cite them.

My daughter left the Church because of this and other issues. She's a devout Christian, but with another congregation. Even my Dad, an ordained Deacon in the Catholic Church, could not convince her women should not be priests.

Perhaps this will help ...
