Bernardo pins killing on Karla

BTORONTO (CP) - An "agitated" Paul Bernardo continues to insist it was his intention to set Ontario schoolgirl Leslie Mahaffy free and that Karla Homolka hatched a murder plot on her own, CBC's The National reported Tuesday.

Bernardo spoke with Ontario Provincial Police on Friday before discussing his claim with his lawyer, Tony Bryant, that a panicked Homolka attempted to murder Mahaffy when the young girl's blindfold fell off, Bryant said in an interview with the CBC.

Bryant said his client wants people to know that it was his intention to set the rape victim free and that it was Homolka who panicked, despite her efforts to present herself as a submissive, battered woman acting on Bernardo's whims.

Bernardo, who insisted at his trial that Homolka choked Mahaffy and Kristen French to death, is barred from speaking publicly about the case.

Homolka was freed on Monday after serving a 12-year sentence for the Mahaffy and French killings. Bernardo is serving a life sentence.

"He wanted to get the message across that she actually tried to kill Leslie Mahaffy by means of an embolism, by injecting an air bubble into her bloodstream," Bryant said.

"Because she was afraid that because the blindfold had fallen off, that she (Mahaffy) would be able to recognize Paul (Bernardo) and presumably herself."

The claim by Bernardo has not been proven in court.

Homolka agreed to the 12-year sentence for her role in the rape, torture and death of French and Mahaffy, as well as that of her own 15-year-old sister Tammy.

In exchange, she testified against ex-husband Bernardo, who was convicted in 1995 on two counts of first-degree murder and later declared a dangerous offender -- a designation that keeps him behind bars indefinitely.

Bryant said Bernardo couldn't keep his silence anymore, as Homolka garners international media attention -- granting a one-on-one interview to tell her side of the story to CBC's French-language network on her first day of her freedom -- and attempts to slip into a quiet life of freedom.

"He became agitated maybe as a result of seeing all the media attention over the last several months," Bryant told CBC.

Neither police nor the Ontario's Crown Attorney's office would comment, CBC reported.

I feel kind of bad about hoping someone will take her down in the next week or so ... but she's almost certain to find a new partner and start killing again.

I have the same opinion of her as well. Her eyes are dead. Did you read the thread about her yesterday? Even the other inmates were spooked. There was a link to a recent photo of her, and she changed her hair color to jet black. I thought it was Madonna at first.

She's a stone cold psychopath, and unfortunately that isn't going to change. She should have never been released.

One argument for the death penalty in especially heinous cases is that once the sentence is carried out, the perps don't walk free and don't ever again get to make 'statements' to the press that re-open the old wounds of family members trying to live without their murdered loved ones.

BTW, has anybody heard anything from Timothy McVeigh lately?

Yes, I saw that yesterday. She's a threat as long as she lives. Hopefully parents in Quebec will be alert.

Thanks! The pic was so small, I couldn't really tell who it was yesterday. The article said she has dyed her hair, but apparently she didn't dye it black. She looks like a drugged out hooker.

People need to be aware that she looks radically different now. She could be a sales clerk, and you wouldn't realize that she's *that* Karla. God, I hope she doesn't reproduce.

It would be good if the current picture were widely distributed.

She desires anonymity but does a TV interview for the whole world to see her? Un huh. She should have been executed, along with her scum husband. I assume her family is not taking her in after she killed her own sister.

I'd never heard of this case till a few days ago, but after stuff I've read about this case on the net, both of these people are sub-human and she is every bit as sick as he is. Canadians better start wondering whose daughter is next.

Most definitely. I don't know if distributing her picture is legal in Canada, or if they have the equivalent of a "Megan's Law". It should still be done. Everyone needs to know if she is in their neighborhood. Usually, I wouldn't say what I just said, but I feel in my heart that she was just as guilty as her husband, she has not been rehabilitated, and will probably strike again in the future. Although her sentence was a joke, she did serve it. I hope they sterilized her.

Yikes, what if she emigrates to the US???

A certain senator from NY will offer her a job.

I don't know if distributing her picture is legal in Canada, or if they have the equivalent of a "Megan's Law".

There is a fairly new law on the books now and her case is, if not the first, then the most notorious case to which it has been applied. It is now possible for restrictions, similar to parole, to be placed on a convict after a sentence has been completed. Her movements are restricted and she has to notify the police of every change of address or appearance (even a change of hair colour has to be reported). The downside is that the Crown has to go back to court every year to renew the restrictions.

Not a chance. US immigration won't even allow an unpardoned convict in for a visit.
