Times Online (UK) ^ | July 4, 2005 | Kath Gourlay

JULY 4 is a date firmly fixed in the consciousness of all Americans. Perhaps it should also be imprinted in the mind of Scots with a sense of history. Who was involved in the building of the White House? And who helped to start the American War of Independence? The surprising answer might be Scottish freemasons.

I understand that your very fragile religious worldview is threatened by the existence of Catholic Freemasons - but they are out there and they are fine men whom I am privileged to call brothers - as both Christians and Masons.

Your great grandfather wouldn't have told you Any details, were he alive; however, he probably would have alaid your misguided fear that there was anything of an occult nature in FreeMasonry.

Just like any other fraternal order, Masons have "secret" rituals, but they about as "occult", as the girl scouts.

If FreeMasonry was a nefarious, occult riven society, then there would have been no need, for those with interest in the occult to leaves; now would there?

And, if your worst fears were factual, then men such as Washington and John Wayne, and Harry Houdini and Teddy Roosevelt, and all of the men who threw the BOSTON TEA PARTY and all of the kings of England ( for the past 300 years ), to name but a few, had to have been occultists. That makes about as much sense as the French priest, Abbe Barruel's specious claim, that the French Revolution was cooked up my Masons and Jews, does...NONE !

Why do I get the impression that you're one of those good Catholics who won't let me out of my parking spot in the church lot on Sundays?

"Masonry as a fraternal organization of men to have fellowship and do good works seems benign enough. But many have made it their religion."

You could say the same thing about college football, or NASCAR, or making money.

""Leftist "logic": "Many of America's Founders were "freemasons" therefore the Constitution really isn't in place to guard absolute (self-evident) moral truths and we have the right to change it."

I still don't get it. Do you believe Masons don't believe in self-evident truths (as in what Freemason Jefferson wrote: "We believe these truths to be self-evident . . ") or are you being sarcastic?

Now I know you are no Marine.

Jar-heads are much smarter than to fall for the tripe you repeat.

Now, I guess I must go plot the destruction of Rome, as did my worthy brothers George Washington and Benjamen Franklin before me.

Loose the tinfoil! It will set you free!

"Freemasonry worldwide had to rediscover its Scottish roots, he said, or its original message of spiritual self-improvement would be lost. “Scotland is different from the rest of the world because we go back long before freemasonry came into being as an 18th-century organisation. We were ordinary working guys, skilled craftsmen, with ancient knowledge and rituals. When freemasonry came in there was a fusion. That didn’t happen anywhere else.” "

From the article, now I have no problem with the ordinary working guys, skilled craftsmen, but the supposed "ancient knowledge and rituals" calls into question what is really being promoted.

Both sides of my father's family were Scottish and came from Scotland/England/Ireland, which I do not know exactly. I can only verify back to 1750 in this country.

I find it humorous that the founding of this nation by anyone claiming to be Christian would give credit to a specific organization. Consider I know what the Bible has to say and it gives NO credit to "secret" organizations for what would be.

I thought so.

I'm tending a drilling rig right now (gas well) and my boredom is being interrupted by periods of absolute terror as crap keeps breaking and spraying gas everywhere.

Subtletees (sp?) are lost as the 105 shade temp. drops to 33 because of decompressing gas on location.

He took the oath of office on his masonic bible (a regular bible with the square and compasses on it, by the way).

BTW, have you seen that the North Texas Masonic Historical Society will have Washington's bible on display June 28th and 29th.
