Mountain Brook High School graduate Natalee Holloway went missing May 30 during a senior trip to Aruba.

THat's an excellent point, it affects what both people are able to comprehend when they're witnessing it as well as what they can then remember in detail later.
I've also posted again and again and again that of course it's understandable that distraught parents under these horribly wrenching circumstances would make mistakes -- and that I know I would too.
But I understand that with all the thousands of posts on this topic, you may not have seen all those posts where I have said those things...again and again and again.
So in consideration of that, I'm thinking of constructing a little "disclaimer" box with text inside that effect. Then, I can copy and paste that disclaimer box into every post I make about Natalee just to stave off some of the ...less reasoned...responses.
I think the point is that understandably emotional moms looking for a lost and likely dead daughter cannot and should not be relied upon to dispense tactical legal advice. Someone amongst her family, friends, and advisors should have told her not to come out with those statements yesterday.
You have got it all wrong again. The boys lied and covered up a crime by their friend or else they were in it together. Look up conciousness of guilt, it is actual evidence in criminal proceedings. They had plenty of time to do the right thing but let 2 innocent men sit in jail because of their lies.
Let the Kalpoes examine their conciouses and do the right thing..quit blaming the Twitty's for pointing the finger at those who truly are despicable and culpable in obstructing justice...
What do you want the Twitty's to do, kiss the Kaploes butts after they did what they did? I suspect a few months ago you were a bleeding heart liberal and still are...how about sending the boys to GITMO and seeing what they have to say? Human nature says the Kalpoes hould get the crap beat out of them and go to jail for covering up things.
Sheesh I imagine you think Bush is responsible for the London bombings too....grow up...
i happen to think they do know things that they can't tell while there is still a chance that Joran can be made to talk. that seems to make sense. were the case closed and then they were to disclose nothing as per their suggestion, i might agree with you. i think it is premature to reach the conclusion you have reached.
Thanks! I do appreciate the kind words.
Anyone else who has posted reasonable and thoughtful responses to me, forgive me if I don't get back to you.
My time in front of the keyboard has been severely limited lately, and what with the terrible news from London this morning, I have a sinking feeling that every chance I get to check into FR, I'll have to use my time looking for news on that topic instead of Natalee.
But my prayers and best wishes are still with Natalee's parents. Anything I've said that is critical of their recent behavior is not meant unkindly, at all. I just hope they take whatever tack is best for them to get the answers they so desperately want.
we don't know that someone didn't try to tell her, but she is, after all, other than dave holloway, the person most affected by this tragedy and may feel she should have her say regardless. to her eventual detriment or not, maybe she was not able to be dissuaded.
Anyone that has visited a foreign country knows there are tons of pirate cabs that are unmarked...it is also likely Natalee just thought she was getting a short ride to the hotel with friends of Joran..whats the big deal.
Welcome to Free Republic to both you snaps, Rippersnapper and Gingersnaps....
Taxis have a vested interest in making sure the tourist can spot them easily. It's how they make their money.
Hmmm ... those newbies are almost clones. It reminds me of at least one other poster here.
I've enjoyed reading this thread; well, as much as I can given the unhappy subject. I missed the thing about phone calls and somewhere there was mentioned a Charles Croes - who is he, please? The DJ was Steve Croes, right? And he's a cell phone supplier?
As for personal accountability: we all make mistakes in judgment. Natalee did not use good judgment. Two friends said they left an hour before she did - but they had no way to know when she left unless someone told them. They said she was NOT drunk then. She must have had some help getting 'drunk' that fast. Especially since they were to leave the next day, one would think NH would turn in earlier.
I think the Kalpoes don't know what happened. And Joran and his father do. And I think they know the body won't be found, either because she's not on the island or the body has been disposed of in such fashion as to make it nonexistent.
In this country, they'd get away with it just like MJ and OJ.
I have been to foreign countries and you do NOT get into vehicles that are not marked TAXI. You do not get into a car with three strange men. That is just common sense and should be OBVIOUS.
I'm a long time lurker, been around here since the impeachment days. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make their comments any less valid, no matter how long or how short their actual registration date.
That's a good point. I understand that people handle things differently. If I were in her place, I can't imagine being able to stand there and speak coherently without spilling over with tears every second.
Let me say, it irritates the spit out of me that Greta keeps saying Halloway!
Clearly you have all the answers. They ought to call you to Aruba so you can sort it all out for them properly.
What do you want the Twitty's to do, kiss the Kaploes butts after they did what they did?
Of course not. But it was a terrible blunder to make permanent enemies of them.
I suspect a few months ago you were a bleeding heart liberal and still are...
LOL! Actually I am, as some say, more right wing than Attila the Hun and just about the oldest and most loyal of FReepers.
I date back to the golden days of bcjohnson (my dear friend and FR mentor), gonzo being grilled by the SS, and the frequent appearances of those wily disruptors, Ash and Eschoir.
(Now anybody who knows the story behind those old names will know I've been here a long time!)
Sheesh I imagine you think Bush is responsible for the London bombings too....grow up...
You sure do leap to all kinds of wild conclusions, based on...what, exactly?
Look, much as I'm in a feisty mood, I'm not going to engage in a pi$$ing contest with you. That's not what Jim Robinson founded this site for, and I know he doesn't like people wasting bandwidth on such silly personal attacks.

Re: natalee-opinions and speculations

Yes, the case. Let's get back to that; let's have a moratorium on criticism of the Aruban authorities for a while and discuss some REASONABLE theories (no aliens, white slavery, etc.) One thing (of many) that bothered me about Greta's interview with Beth about 10 days ago or so, where the two were in Natalee's room at the HI, and Greta commented on the room, what was in it, etc. Beth pointed to Natalee's "packed bags" as evidence that Natalee was ready to leave. What I saw was a large, unzipped duffle bag and what was probably a purse, each on a chair. Greta asked "packed, or never unpacked?" Beth didn't respond, but I think that was a good question. With four girls staying in the room (2 double beds), and for only a 4-night trip, wasn't it more likely that Natalee never unpacked, but just took clothes out of her bag as she needed them? That's what I do, except to hang up a few things in the closet. I almost NEVER put things in the drawers (one time when I did, I left two sweaters behind; it cost $10 to have them mailed back to me). Wonder where her bathing suit(s) was/were. Packed, or hanging up in bathroom to drip dry (presumably, she'd been wearing it Sunday, gone in the water, washed/rinsed it out). If she really was packed and ready to leave, and so organized as Beth keeps insisting, wouldn't she have laid out a set of clothes to wear Monday for the trip back, or at least put them on top of the duffle bag? I'm not saying this proves/disproves a voluntary disappearance, but I don't think one can say for sure that she was already packed.
Also, the room was on the first floor, with a sliding glass door, which could have been left unlocked, if the girls were in and out, and someone could have entered the room that way (Natalee or someone else). Greta asked if it was possible that Natalee had come back to the room and gone out again, and Beth was absolutely insistent that Natalee HAD NOT come back to the room. But how could she be sure, since from what little I've heard, the other roommates may have been out at the pool or in the lobby until very early (5 am), so she could have come back and gone out again without anyone seeing her. Beth also showed Natalee's wallet, with lots of crisp $1 bills for tipping, etc. According to Beth, the only thing missing was Natalee's driver's license. She said Natalee didn't have a credit card; passport was there.
Last night (Wed, Jul 6), Greta had a long interview with Beth about that Monday when Natalee didn't show up in the lobby and Beth was informed. Beth was hazy about the time she got the phone call (around noon or 12:30, I think she said; kind of strange since it had been reported the group noticed her missing when she didn't show up in the lobby at 830 to go to the airport). Beth was in a car in Memphis when she got the call (I wasn't paying close attention, not sure why she was there, but assumed that's where the group was flying in to, vs. Birmingham?). Beth said she was going to pick Natalee up at the airport, since the mother of one of the other girls had taken them there for the outgoing flight. Said she called 911 several times as she was driving, saying "my daughter's been kidnapped in Aruba." Beth drove for a couple of hours at 110-120 mph and was stopped by a policeman (I presume she was driving back to Bham?), whom she also told about Natalee being kidnapped in Aruba. Greta asked how Beth came to that conclusion; Beth said she just knew. Jug arranged for a plane, and they left Birmingham abt 5 or 5:30. Oh, and she said Jug had given Natalee $300 in $1 bills for tips, taxis, food, etc. 300 bills would have been a pretty thick wad; from the view of the wallet (in Greta's interview), it looked like maybe 10-15 were left. I presume Natalee had some other money, or maybe Beth was confused, and it was $300 cash in total, not $300 in ones. So, maybe there is some truth to the story that Natalee approached Joran in the HI casino and said she lost some of her father's money and could he help her win it back (please, I don't know where this came from, but it was weeks ago, I think maybe from one of the VDS parents?), and he won $100 for her.
I believe Weed is incorrect on the amount of one dollar bills that Jug gave Natalee, he post 300 one dollar bills when Beth stated 100 one dollar bills.
"The Twittys have likely earned the enduring enmity of the Kalpoes (including the boys' mom), the very people who might be able to give the Twittys the information they so desperately want."
What makes you think they wouldn't lie to the Twitty's the same way they've been lying to the investigators? For God's sake, they didn't seem to care about the 2 security guards who were rounded up. None of these 3 guys care about anything except saving their own butts.
If you do not see me for awhile its because it is dark as all getout around here. I can hear the thunder in the distance, I can see the flickers of lightnen, the trees are slightly swaying in the wind at the present.
Criminy, we did the club scene on the Riviera, but we still slept in our beds at night.
Stay safe!
Greta left Aruba, (sorry if already posted):

Did I say I thought they'd never lie again? I don't think so.
What I did say, if you read the post, is that Greta seemed to be implying that Deepak might be "turned," as they say in the spy game.
Deepak MIGHT have been a source of help to the Twittys. (To repeat, I just said "MIGHT." I've been using phrases such as "might" and "could be" all along. "Might" and "could be" are different from "definitely will be." Just to be extra clear!)
For God's sake, they didn't seem to care about the 2 security guards who were rounded up.
On the contrary, Mr. Johns said Deepak apologized to him in jail.
