For the fifth straight year, it was a victory Takeru Kobayashi could truly relish.
Kobayashi, 27, captured the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest Monday, gobbling a nauseating 49 dogs in 12 minutes - but missing his own world record of 53 1/2, set at last year's July Fourth competition.
The win means the coveted Mustard Yellow Belt will return to Japan for the ninth year out of the past 10. New Jersey's Steve Keiner, who won in 1999, is the only American to capture the title in the past decade.
Kobayashi, of Nagano, stands 5 feet 7 inches and weighs just 144 pounds.
The runner-up was Sonya Thomas of Alexandria, Va. - known as The Black Widow on the competitive-eating circuit - who set an American record by downing 37 hot dogs in the same 12 minutes.
Thomas, who manages a Burger King restaurant, separates the hot dog from the bun and eats them separately. She dips the bun in water to make it easier to swallow with less chewing.
"I want to be No. 1 in the world, so I practice," she told CNN shortly after the contest. "I'm working on more speed."
She said she was planning a light dinner - maybe a salad.
"My stomach doesn't hurt," she said, "but my jaw is tired."
Thomas, who weighs a remarkable 105 pounds, is a rising speed-eating star. Last December in Atlantic City, N.J., she finished off 89 meatballs - about six pounds' worth - in 12 minutes. And in August, she captured a lobster-eating contest in Maine by consuming 38 of the creatures in 12 minutes.
The hot dog contest takes place outside the original Nathan's in Coney Island. The contest was first held there in 1916.

these people must be at risk to die young of some kind of gastro-intestinal illness.
My Japanese wife can out-eat me no problemo ...and she is skinny as a rail ...These people eat , eat , eat all day long , but the vast majority are thin ...Different metabolism I guess ...
When the winning margin is 12 dogs, any crumbs or bun fragments at one's feet won't mean diddly-doo to the result.
Dont worry , Next year we are sending in Monica Lewinsky no one is better with a Tube steak than Monica. Maybe we better watch for debris on her blue dress also.
I read something, or saw something that said the reason smaller people can eat more than fat people is because they do not have all that fat blocking the expansion of there stomache.
"Fat and the Furious"
Episode KH703
Original Airdate: 11/10/02
It's couples night at the movies, and Bill mopes around because he doesn't want to be a ninth wheel. He reluctantly agrees to tag along, but only for the food. Bill amazes the gang by wolfing down numerous hot dogs in a snap, prompting everyone to debate whether to call the Guinness Book of World Records to find out if he set a new record.
An IFOCE (the NFL of competitive eating) groupie encourages Bill to sign up for the big contest. She is convinced that Bill is capable of breaking the Japanese teams long winning streak in the contest, but Dale openly doubts Bill's chances.
At the qualifying event, Dale mocks Bill, prompting Bill to retort that Dale is jealous. To prove him wrong, Dale scarfs down a hot dog in no time, leaving a dejected Bill to question his own talent. Dale finally admits that he is embarrassed by his own talent because it brings back a memory from his childhood when bullies taunted him. Dale decides not to compete after acknowledging that the painful memory caused him to give Bill a hard time. But when Bill competes against a Laotian guy, with Kahn wholeheartedly supporting the Laotian, Bill realizes that he must stop or risk busting his gut.
Hank says it's OK; the United States doesn't need to win everything. Dale exacts his revenge by polishing off a hot dog at the airport as the Laotian guys, who are sick of hot dogs, walk by. Meanwhile, Peggy tries to hide the contest from Bobby because she doesn't want him to participate.
