Critics Call Radio Hosts' Trip Propaganda Mission

Sunday, July 03, 2005 By Kelley Beaucar Vlahos

WASHINGTON — A contingent of conservatives talk radio hosts is headed to Iraq this month on a mission to report "the truth" about the war: American troops are winning, despite headlines to the contrary.

The "Truth Tour" has been pulled together by the conservative Web cast radio group Rightalk.com and Move America Forward, a non-profit conservative group backed by a Republican-linked public relations firm in California.

"The reason why we are doing it is we are sick and tired of seeing and hearing headlines by the mainstream media about our defeat in Iraq," Melanie Morgan, a talk radio host (search) for KSFO Radio in San Francisco and co-chair of Move America Forward, said.

Morgan said the media is "imposing a Vietnam template on this war."

"This is not Vietnam," she said. "War is war, and it's dangerous, and the killing is taking place all of the time. At the same time, where there is danger, there is success and there is a mainstream media that is determined to shut out that success."

She said the group is going to Iraq to support American troops, who see a disconnection with what they experience and what's being reported in the United States. She said the incongruence is leading to "morale problems."

But critics, including independent journalists who have reported from Iraq, say the trip is a propaganda mission for the U.S. military and the Bush administration and cannot be considered "journalism" by any standards.

"This is the most pathetic thing I've heard in a long time. They should be ashamed of themselves," Peter Beinart, editor of left-leaning The New Republic magazine, said.

It's worse for girls having to watch Al Franken. It gives them zits.

It's easy to be pro war from a tv/radio station thousands of miles away from the war zone.
It's also easy to criticize a job that you aren't doing - from ten time zones away or from close at hand, it doesn't matter. Second-guessing is still only second-guessing.

Let's face it, there's only one Oliver North. For the rest, we are lucky if they don't second-guess the troops and the president. The way that "objective" journalists and the rest of the Democrats do.

Do you know how many death threats Hannity gets? Why don't you stop being so critical of people that are making a difference for our Military and our country and do something yourself instead of whining.

"If they were actually reporters out to tell the story, good, bad, warts and all, than it wouldn't be entirely objectionable," he said. "But if they are acting entirely as government propagandists, which seems to be the case here, it's improper."
"Objective" journalists posture as "independent" - but in fact they exist to criticize anyone who's actually doing good, and to praise their opposition. It's a classic means of attracting attention, an old advertising trick. Irritate the viewer.

That is the only side of the story the "objective" journalist thinks is legitimate "news." But that is a half truth at best, and can be a very big lie. Looking for the story that the "objective" journalists look past is entirely honorable, whatever the "objective" journalist thinks.

I don't remember the date last year, but I took great pleasure in watching Ann Coulter rip this gap-toothed Jim Carrey wannabe to shreds at a debate. It was right around the time of the release of "How to Talk to a Liberal-if you must".

On a different topic, E! is showing the Saturday Night Live episode that was not long after 9-11. Did anyone see it when it happened?

Are you talking about the episode with then Mayor Guliani, and members of the New York police and fire department? The theme of the show if I remember correctly is that the show must go on.

I stand corrected (about Rush anyway). I agree that what Hannity is doing is a good cause, but he'd have more credibility with me if he did something which required him to put his a$$ in danger, like the troops are. It's easy to be pro war from a tv/radio station thousands of miles away from the war zone. He should do his show from the green zone for a month if he wants to show support for the troops.

/end rant, I just hate armchair quarterbacks

...like yourself?

That's the one. I was just wondering, aside from the moving opening with Rudy, Kerik, and the FDNY, how was it? Perhaps there was a thread on it. Unfortunately, I didn't have a tape to record it, and I don't recall hearing anything about it at the time...I was more concerned about kicking OBL's ass (and his friends IN IRAQ. (Still am.)

The opening with Guliani, Kerik with the police and fire department is all I can remember from the show. It was the best opening to this day on SNL.

Thank you, sir, for your kind words. Not for me, but for the other thousands who are in much greater harm's way.

I found a link to the show details archived at this SNL site:

http://snl.jt.org/ep.php?i=0109298

Looks like they had the "Jeopardy" Sketch that night which would have been Will Ferrel playing Alex Trebek so besides the 9/11 tribute it was worth watching for that sketch alone.

"What's the matter? Don't they trust Us?" NO! What's pathetic about the liberals; they just don't get it. If they know it or not they're sleeping with the enemy.(I think they are hot bunking it.) It's about time we campaigned for our troops to win this WOT. Nothing wrong with it!

I think FoxNews has to be fair and balance, right?
