...The truth is, immigration to America hasn't changed much since early in the last century, when one of the greatest sources of poor, unlettered immigrants to the U.S. was Ireland.
...And there is little doubt that there are labor needs in this country that need addressing. There is a shortage of truck drivers in the U.S. and a shortage of all sorts of workers in hospitals such as nurses and clean-up staff. In many industries, including modern warehousing, education is needed to cope with computer-rich work environments.
...The word "legal" raises the issue that causes most of the fears about immigration the fact that roughly 700,000 illegal immigrants annually enter the country and remain here. The Pew Hispanic Center concludes in a recent report that 10 million residents are here illegally, 57% of them from Mexico. This has aroused political passions and demagoguery from some notably California's onetime immigrant Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who cried out, "Close the borders!" a while back.

Glad to know you're anti-illegal too.
Happy 4th to you, rod.
That study about the educational success of children of illegal aliens is contrary to every study I've seen, which showed large numbers of 2nd generation hispanics dropping out before the 11th grade.
Plus, the American people should be able to decide who gets to join our country, and they overwhelmingly support limitations on immigration. That should settle the matter. We elect our representatives and pay our taxes so they will enforce the laws. Now do it. Regardless of whether it helps or hurts the economy. It's called the rule of law.
There is a shortage of nurses because of politics, low pay and grueling hours. My base payscale as a nurse has only changed $2.40/hr in 20 years. Who else want works like that? Not many.....i.e. the shortage. As for importing foreign nurses.....I'm sure gov't thinks it's a grand idea. Why marry the real deal when you can settle for cheap, sloppy seconds? JMHO
It is AGAINST the law to come here ILLEGALLY. It hurts our econmomy, does not help it, we have young people lined up for jobs such as truck drivers, the problem is they can't get the training for it or don't know how. Our public schools should be teaching them how to do such things instead of how to be gay, they should learn how to get training so they can get entry level jobs such as truck driver. Illegals need to get out of our country and stay out until they can come in legally.
This study, and most others like it, are full of BS and are slanted to show what they want and that is that Illegals are wonderful and it is just hunky dory to have millions of them come streaming over our border. We have always limited the amount of immigrants to come into the country and we need to keep doing it.
The two biggest factors at the present, aside from the biggest one which is the economy, are disease and terrorists.
We cannot leave our borders unguarded at this time, we cannot have open borders or our lives are all forfeit.
Anyone who campaigns for open borders are campaigning for terrorists to enter the country at will.
A source I know who runs the Hispanic outreach marketing effort for one of the world's biggest banks has told me that immigrans, mostly Mexicans, send some $17 billion in cash out of the country every year.
So I think we need to immediately subtract $17 billion in any calculation about the net benefit of illegal immigration to our nation's economy.
And please, don't try to pursuade me that turning the USA into a bi-lingual nation will do anything positive for the political and social fabric of our country.
" workers in hospitals such as nurses and clean-up staff. "
I wager $500.00 that you can't find one "illegal" working as a nurse in any hospital the USA. Hospitals for the most part are concerned about issues like citizenship, immigration status, licensure and credentialing when it comes to hiring staff.
Perhaps we as patients should be forgiving, forget things like credentials and licenses, hire any illegal without a background check, and put our lives and the lives of our loved ones in their hands. Gosh, we could even get lower hospital costs by hiring cheap, illegal foreign labor.
There are a lot of legal immigrants working as nurses. Maybe we need more.
I'll comment: We are not doing the best we can. In fact, we're doing damn little. Seal the borders. The LEGALS won't mind at all.
Give it up - your arguments for illegal immigration just don't float in here. We're sick of 'em. Just because you've decided to sell out the nation, doesn't mean you're going to get any more to follow you, traitor.
I don't know in which part of Texas you live, but even though there are only half as many ads because of the holiday, todays Houston Chronicle online has 165 job ads for nurses and the regular paper has even more. Some are offering substantial sign on bonuses.

There is a shortage of nurses because of politics, low pay and grueling hours.>>>>>>>
The nurses in my family are the only ones making any money! I work 60 hours to gross what my niece (an RN) earns in less than half that time and I work a rotating shift job working weekends and nights at a job which takes most people two years to learn to be good at it.
There are 14 million Americans who don't have full time jobs.
Tell me again why we need expensive illegal immigrants who refuse to assimilate.
they should learn how to get training so they can get entry level jobs such as truck driver.>>>>>
I would not describe truck driving as "entry level", I have never been one but I deal with them every day. Truck driving used to be considered a career and was well compensated, often leading to self-employment, many of the older drivers drive their own rig and have one or more other rigs being driven for them by employees. Unfortunately, like many others, truck drivers are having a hard time earning what they earned twenty or more years in the past. Truck drivers at one time earned solidly middle-class incomes, many of them now are just eking out an existence. There is no shortage of people when compensation is high, there is a shortage of willing workers when compensation is set only high enough to attract illegal immigrants.
