Church Asks Jacksonville to Ban Baggy Pants, Gold Teeth
Florida Ledger ^ | 6/02/2005 | AP

A church has asked for a citywide ban on low-hanging pants and gold-capped teeth, saying they promote a thuggish image.

Changing the image of young people could help Jacksonville cut unemployment, racial profiling and a rising per-capita murder rate now the highest in the state, said Richard Burton, deacon of Epiphany Baptist Church.

The 250 member independent Baptist church approved the resolution last month.

"They were tired of seeing kids' underwear," said Burton, who serves on the NAACP's national board.

Jacksonville city officials have yet to take up the measure, although Councilwoman Elaine Brown said she was willing to discuss it with church members.

Others were less encouraging.

"I think it's unenforceable," Councilman Daniel Davis told The Florida Times-Union for Sunday's edition.

Duval County public schools have banned sagging pants and exposed underwear, but not removable gold or silver teeth caps.

Dentists say the caps can help breed tooth-rotting bacteria.

A proposal to ban exposed underwear died in the Florida Legislature this spring. Lawmakers in Louisiana and Virginia have also failed to ban exposed underwear.

" [...] removable gold or silver teeth caps"...?

Is this on the level? I mean, seriously...? :)

Those caps sound pretty disgusting to me too. I've never liked seeing baggy pants either. The only ones who did that when I was growing up where the "pillow people."
I have seen some conservatives be hesitant to have government intervene too much in controlling what people wear though.

As a "fixer" of broken jewelry this freeper can say first hand "yes it is"!!

I had a customer that had a "cap", (10kt) that covered both his front top middle teeth. From him NOT taking the darn things out when he ate, he wore thru the bottom of the cap, making it loose the strength to stay on his teeth.

....I had to solder those dang things THREE DIFFERENT TIMES !!.....( and not that it makes much of a difference, but this person was white, TRYING to be "hip-hop" like "Lil' Jon".....)

Well, since any church is the arbiter of morals for only its membership, perhaps a better start would be prohibiting visible underwear and precious-metals dental work on its congregation.

Me, I think they'd get farther with the former than the latter. A gold tooth is far less offensive to me than airbrushed Dragon Lady fingernails bearing 76ers logos.

I mean, you can't accidentally stab me with your teeth, no matter how hard you try.

Hear ye, hear ye . . . hark ye well to my words.

If you must have metal in your mouth, get braces.

Otherwise, prepare yourself for the mocking that I will surely visit upon you and your dipshittery.

I live in Jacksonville.. if this passes, Churches will burn. Thats not a threat, I'm just sure there's enough anger at the constant way the Southern Baptist Church tries to run the city that it would snap the second something so blatantly racist got passed...

You already can't wear hats in the mall because they got away with the bandanna ban, so they went for backwards hats, and then all hats...

9/10 Clubs and bars get shut down or denied a liquor liscense because of proximity to a church...

I seriously wish they WOULD push their limits on something like this and watch the political backlash bury their cause..

When I was a teenager adults didn’t like to see DA haircuts, T-shirts (with cigarette pack rolled up in sleeve) worn as outer garb, blue jeans, or side burns, “saying they promote a thuggish image”.

I like the idea of wearing you pants low and showing your underwear and the cap backwards too. It lets you know immediately who not to hire and points out the idiots quickly. Its like wearing a sign that says " Look at me , I am stupid".

It was also a time when violent teenage street gang members wore suits and ties to parties.

I've never liked seeing baggy pants either.

We see them dressed like that all the time near where I work in Fort Lauderdale. They look like graduates from "Clown College". It's actually quite hilarious to watch them ride a bike or even walk down the street, they have to hold onto the pants to keep them from falling down.

My buddy from the D.R. can barely keep his composure when we drive by some of them on the way to lunch. It's a laugh-riot...

Actually, they look like rejects from clown college. They might as well not wear pants. I laugh too. The other thing that gets me is all the piercings. People would have been beat up in my day for having them. Those nose piercings/rings make me want to throw a rope around it and lead them to pasture.

failed to ban exposed underwear.

Maybe we can ban just certain people from wearing exposed underwear.
