Hackensack mayor will yield post after year

HACKENSACK - Marlin G. Townes Jr. was sworn in as Hackensack's first African-American mayor Friday, but the City Council also announced a power-sharing arrangement under which he will serve just a year.

The council also selected Councilwoman Karen K. Sasso as deputy mayor and hired Joseph Zisa, the cousin of former Mayor Jack Zisa, as city attorney.

Traditionally, the mayor is the council member who received the most votes in the general election. Joseph DeFalco had been the front-runner to be the next mayor, but he died the morning of May 10, just hours after voting began. Instead, Townes received the most votes. He replaced Jack Zisa as mayor.

"Joe was truly the mayor of our team and would have been mayor no matter how many votes I received," said Townes, unanimously elected mayor by the council.

He said council members had not given much thought to who would replace DeFalco as mayor.

"With the help of our hometown paper, it quickly became an issue," he said.

Instead of just picking one mayor, council members agreed to take turns serving in the top spot.

Marlin G. Townes Jr. was sworn in as Hackensack's first African-American mayor Friday,

Wonder if he had the test to know what tribe in Africa he descended from?

If it is newsworthy that he is African we should know more about his past.

I am also interested to know what his African past tells us about his quality as an individual, and please no stereotypes or generalizations, we know everyone should be judged by the content of their character, not the color of his skin.

In NJ, many of the blacks now call themselves "Community People" ergo the term "Community Mayor".

ick. I saw that rise in CA: The "community people". It happened on the heels of the "Village People": community people. blech. They say all politics is local; but it ain't. In CA, it morphed into "community-oriented policing". Everyone fell for it. Sounded good, like a neighborhood watch. What this "slogan" did was promote quotas in the police departments. That only blacks should police "black communities", gay to gay communities, and suburban communities were left to brawl with whomever was in office and for whatever reasons. You bet crime in the suburbia has increased.. What's the usual reply from the "community sloganeers"? You need a "community". So, white KKK/aryan cells arise in CA. What's the response? EVIL EVIL! CALL DR. SMITH! THERE IS EVIL AFOOT IN THE COMMUNITY.

Right. "community". "communal" sounds more like it.

But I forgot my manners here. Thank YOU very much for providing me that insight into "what" is going on in NJ. Just watch locally, KKK will arise, or those pretending to be KKK. I've seen this dance over too many years. All racialists dance to the tune of "community" -- aka.. 40 acres and a mule.

Racism is BIG business. Lot's of money to be made and lots of dissension to happen. Chips away at our moral fabric, pits the haves and have nots, lower standards in schools, etc. I always believed that the Socialists and others were behind it.

They are. This is why they work focus to the "cultural" respect (aka: diversity) issues in re "race". They see this as a bigger lure to enticing "big corporations" to expanding their market reach. It's about money. Kids. Well, they don't vote, and somehow they'll struggle and get through... uh-huh. And dems are constantly trying to lower the age for voting. Like as in voting for big liberal "corporation" schemes, but hidden under lots of vacuous, but "seemingly logical" sounding terms. And scream if the Military dares to try to recruit or even have a booth at a highschool or college. NOPE! .. they are control freaks. Gotta have control over others.. otherwise, individual in the "community" might just figure out how to live more freely and on terms with one's own conscience.. Can't have *that*!
