PORT KLANG, June 30 (Bernama) -- United States aircraft carrier USS Nimitz arrived at Westport, here Thursday for its maiden call in Malaysia, the first nuclear-powered vessel to dock in Malaysian waters.
Nimitz commanding officer Captain T.N. Branch said the ship's nuclear power plants posed no radiation threat as there had never been any such incident in its 30-year service.
During that time, the ship had travelled 132 million miles, which was equivalent to 5,000 times around the earth, and called at 150 countries, he added.
Touted as the largest warship in the world, the US$4.1 billion (RM15.6 billion) USS Nimitz was commissioned on May 13, 1975.
It has two nuclear power plants for its propulsion and is more than 18 storeys high from the keel to the top of the mast.
The ship, which is manned by a crew of 3,200 plus 2,480 personnel for the air wing, carries 45 jet fighters, 12 supporting aircraft and six helicopters.
Rear Admiral Peter H. Daly, the commander of the Nimitz's Carrier Strike Group Eleven, said the crews were eager to witness Malaysian culture and people during the five-day port call.
"We are all very excited to visit Kuala Lumpur especially to see the Petronas Twin Towers," he told local reporters invited aboard the Nimitz for a tour organised by the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
He said the main purpose of the port call was to further strengthen the bilateral relationship between the US and Malaysia.
Helicopter pilot Second Class Petty Officer Kortney Backer, 22, said she was glad for the opportunity to visit Malaysia and it was a relief to be on land again after a long voyage.
I'm planning on going down tommorrow to see the ship as well.
Miss Malaysia
You can always come and visit - I ain't never met a fellow FReeper yet.
Looks like they are off by a factor of about 100. And that "Helicopter pilot Petty Officer Second Class..." is a little suspect also.

Two nuclear reactors, or possibly dilithium crystals?
502.3 miles per hour. Fascinating.
Shhhh Top Secret. They've got Scotty working down in engineering.

ICE COLD TIGER BEER
Doggone. Got beat by two whole minutes. Heh heh.
Thanks. My wifes pretty understanding, but understands why I should not be let lose in Malaysia. Shes Cambodian/Chinese btw.
Ive never met a Freeper either. Guess that means they don't exist and Bush just made them up.
BTTT!!!!!
The highest culture...
Not an Irish ping - it's one of those 'ping your list' type threads!
In my case it was on the French Riviera. (A tough assignment but someone had to do it.)
Enjoy your Fourth ... and I hope many sailors taste your chili.
Saliva all on the keyboard now from these variuos photos (of the Chili Dogs and Tiger Beer that is!) Terima kasi
STILL no Velveeta?!
I smell a conspiracy, man. It is another attempt by Tha Man to keep a FReeper down. Call Art Bell and, like, tell him how the Trilateral Commission and the Bildebergers have been hasslin' ya! ;-)
Tiger beer is pretty damned good. Also, I rather like saigon Beer (formerly Biere La Rue).
Things sure have changed since this oldsalt retired about twenty years ago {sarcasm off}.
You would think that a reporter assigned to write about things military would actually know something about the military. Too much to ask, huh?
