TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A statewide poll of registered voters says Democratic Governor Brad Henry would win re-election in a race with former Republican Congressman J.C. Watts.

The Oklahoma Poll co-sponsored by the Tulsa World and Tulsa TV station KOTV found 48.5 percent would vote for Henry and 33.9 percent would vote for Watts. About 17.5 percent were undecided.

Watts has not decided whether to run but a spokesman says he's giving the idea "serious consideration." Henry has said he will run for a second term.

The poll was taken June 23rd through 27th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points. The poll also found widespread support for the governor.

Seventy-two percent say they approve of the job Henry is doing, 17.5 percent disapprove and 10.5 percent are undecided.

This poll shows what many had suspected: Governor Henry hasn't done enough to upset most Oklahomans. I think the national party will end up spending its money elsewhere unless Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin runs against Brad Henry... she's a proven statewide vote-getter, unlike J.C. Watts.

Any particular reason people don't like J.C. Watts? He always seemed pretty OK to me.

I don't think it has anything to do with liking or not liking J.C. Watts. More likely Gov. Henry just hasn't done much of anything to turn the electorate against him. Voters don't often turn an incumbent out for no reason, even if his partisan label doesn't fit the state/district.

Mary Fallin just announced she won't be running for governor; she's staying put as Lt. Governor.

I own property in Tulsa so I keep some track of things there. From what I hear the economy there is lousy. How does a Governor stay popular in that type of environment?

He promised a lottery during the campaign, and he got elected. He got a lottery passed. Other than that, he has done nothing to speak of. But on the other hand, he has done nothing, which usually makes it hard for someone to run against him and beat him. What do you say. He hasn't p*@sed anyone off, because he hasn't done anything. He will be hard to beat.

That says it all. A liberally run and biased paper (which I might actually do some work for in the fall) and the local PBS affiliate. I've learned that liberal polls will lean liberal. I was so mad when Largent lost. How cool would that have been to have a republican hall of fame WR as your governer?

Not all that lousy. Lots of lotteries/gambling/Casinos. If you like museums or casinos Tulsa's the place, if not, find somewhere else to live

Steve Largent would probably be Governor today if he had kept his opinion about Elian Gonzalez to himself. I lost almost all respect for him then and it never came back. It was a big deal for conservatives here in Florida, but in a three way race in Oklahoma in was probably the difference between winning and losing. He sided with Reno and Clinton and the Jack Booted thugs that snatched Elian and it clearly hurt him.

I was disappointed in him for that also. The Elian fiasco was a clear case of Republican cowardice. George Bush supposedly told the Republicans not to fight over Elian.

George Bush was Gov of Texas then and had no say. Jeb Bush could not fight the Feds, and even Bob Graham had his worthless hands tied. This was Clinton/Reno being led by Castro, and that evil, left wing Church. Janet Reno is an alcoholic and is incompetent, and always had Eric Holder,Jamie Gorelick or Web Hubbell make all the decisions.

George Bush had the Republican nomination wrapped up and had the ability to lead the Republicans on the issue which he chose not to do.
