EXCERPTED:
O'Connor, 75, said she will leave before the start of the court's next term in October, or when the Senate confirms her successor. There was no immediate word from the White House on who might be nominated to replace O'Connor.
It's been 11 years since the last opening on the court, one of the longest uninterrupted stretches in history. O'Connor's decision gives Bush his first opportunity to appoint a justice.
"This is to inform you of my decision to retire from my position as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, effective upon the nomination and confirmation of my successor. It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms. I will leave it with enormous respect for the integrity of the court and its role under our constitutional structure."

LET'S GET READY TO RRRRUMBLLLLLLLLLLLE!!!!!!
Don't let the door hit you on the way out! Bub-bye, Sandy!
Battle royale on the horizon.
Well, if past history means anything, this is the perfect opportunity for Bush to nominate another liberal.
That was my second comment.
You mean like Janice Rogers Brown?
Geeze, I opened this thread with the intent to type the exact phrase that you did. You beat me to the punch. But then, it's a sentiment that is so widely held among freepers -- and all rationale people, I suspect -- that I shouldn't have been surprised I wasn't the first to shoot my guns in the air and do a victory jig.
I had a dream last week that Orrin Hatch would be nominated to the Supreme Court.
Farwell, Sandra.
Now please take Souter and that filthy hag Ginsberg with you.
Thank you.
Diana Ross?
Let the games begin. This is going to be totally nasty.
I hope your dream was wrong.we need a true conservative.(someone who is Pro Life wouldn't hurt)
Too bad Janice Brown took so long to get the Appellate Court position.
She would be a perfect pick right now if she had a couple of years under her belt.
Thanks for the note!
Justice O'Connor will not be missed by us.
Let's hope the White House nominates a good and strong person. Boy this is going to be a real pi**ing contest.
Viva Garza!
Look for Rehniquist to step down in the fall after O'Connor's replacement is confirmed. I think that the reason he isn't doing so now is to "protect" the country from too much turmoil on the High Court.
I'm hoping for the best, honestly. I think we'll get a conservative, the constituency is a little pi$$ed right now, so I think Bush won't let us down with another leftist nominee. With luck we'll maybe even get a Constitutionalist, but I don't think the president himself qualifies for that, so it's probably hoping for too much.
This is going to be fun to watch.
*gets out the popcorn*
