Texans leading attack on eminent domain ruling
By Maria Recio
Star-Telegram Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Sugar Land joined forces with Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and other lawmakers Thursday in pledging to undo a Supreme Court ruling that allows governments to seize private property for economic development.
DeLay was the lead speaker at a crowded news conference during which he unveiled a House bill to deny federal monies to federal, state or local projects that rely on eminent domain.
The House also passed a nonbinding resolution late Thursday expressing "grave disapproval" of the ruling.
"This is a horrible decision by the Supreme Court," DeLay said. "The results of this decision could wreak havoc on our economy, on our society and on the very social contract on which self-government is based. No court that denies property rights will long respect and recognize other basic human rights."
Fellow GOP Rep. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced the bill Thursday. It immediately drew more then 60 co-sponsors, signaling the nerve the decision has hit among lawmakers.
"I think this is an outright assault on private property," said Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Calif., chairman of the House Resources Committee. "It is an outright assault on every homeowner in America. And Congress has to respond to this. We cannot let the courts step in and take away what are our constitutional rights."

Even a stopped clock is right once in a while.
.
Well you should know since it is your side, that is the broken clock, with your thinking that Delay and Cornyn are "RINOS".
I think the Republicans can use Kelo very successfully. It should become a litmus test for all appointments to the bench, particularly those on the Supreme Court.

DELAY considered a RINO?!
I don't care who manages to get this piece of crap ruling overturned, just overturn it.
Ask adam, also it seems you consider Cornyn a RINO, he isn't.
Second, maybe this will force a showdown between states rights v federal rights and we can get back to the Constitution on a lot more issues.
Since when?
This proud Texan is proud of Tom DeLay!
If he's a RINO--then we need many more RINOS
Good grief--unbelievable!

I am glad Cornyn and DeLay have seen the light on this one.
It is fundamental to the rest of our liberties. All of our rights (relationship of the Individual to the State) are fundamentally defined by the right to own, use, and sell property as the individual sees fit. If the State does not respect that right, it probably does not respect a whole buncha others. 'Pod.
ditto
This is a sham. If they really wanted to do something they would impeach the socialists on the court that can't seem to read a simple document like the constitution.
But just like all politicians they'd rather add another unconstitutional law rather than attack the problem at it's source.
Our republic is dead
I'm not a very big Tom DeLay fan (and not because I think he's a 'RINO' - I think 'RINO' is a sophomoric term used to put down those you disagree with. I'm not a fan because I think he's a crook.) But I do like this. It had better pass all the way through.
