The last election showed the world that mere preference is now less important than the depth support. The Bush brothers and their advisers understand this principle and have remained loyal to their base despite the relentless attacks from liberals of all stripes. Jeb's support runs deep.

I'm guessing there was the "I wouldn't want to live like that" factor.
I just read Mark Fuhrman's book, Silent Witness, btw, and highly recommend it.
