Ha Ha!  I always laugh when white, self satisfied northern liberals claim they are not racist but then make sure their town has super high property taxes and a tiny school district.  Having grown up in a very urban part of New Jersey, (alas, now confined to the burbs), I laugh when their kids mimic being from my old neighborhood.

I've traveled on business to Atlanta and Charlotte many times over the past 20 years and watched as more and more of my northeast neighbors moved there.  I knew one day they would ruin a part of the country that I found enjoyable to visit.

I'm sorry my southern FReeper friends, we didn't like them up here either.

That's pretty much what most Yankees do - Leave the Northeast for the South and then bitch that the South isn't as good as the Northeast whilst trying to ruin their new locale.

I will always live in a neighborhood where my kids can walk safely to a good, safe school. One where there is low crime and a real sense of community. If high propertyy taxes and small districts deliver that, then that's the price I pay.

If wanting, and getting, the best for my children and my family somehow makes me a racist, then label me as you wish. I paid for the rights.

Buckhead, as haughty as it always has been, is not the same as when I first spent a lot of time there in the early 90's.  Maybe it's just because I'm older.  Maybe not.

It's got to be tough in the South--you get all the people who can't hack it in the northeast so they move to where they think the competition is easier, but then they find they're out of their element.

If she'd stayed in Lexington until 2005, she could have sold her home for enough to buy three mansions in Charlotte. It's very painful when you try to reverse the process.

Educational testing...allows affluent white movers to consult the numbers and buy homes near schools replete with others like themselves, segregating in streamlined fashion.

Okay, do they test the kiddies to see if they are white? No, well then, if they are testing them to see if they do well on tests and, if so, is he implying that blacks cannot do well on tests??? There are sentences in this article that are so bad that I began to feel schizophrenic reading it.

The point is that the school district was not a high crime school district and in fact, it was the lifestyle that attracted the northerners to the location in the first place.

As a lifelong Yankee who will never move to the South (no disrespect, I just like battling the northern liberals in their home turf too much), I understand how densely populated locations become even informally partitioned to deliver a sense of community.  I don't mind paying the taxes but I do mind liberals escaping Manhattan, coming to NJ to educate their kids while putting down their doughty neighbors, only to return to the jet setting life once their kid graduates high school.  Sounds a lot like what is happening in Charlotte!

It's not racist to want good schools and low crime.  However, it is annoying to be lectured about racism by liberals who never visited the inner city never mind lived there.

Word of advice. Don't expect to get any more respect from some people as a "good Yankee" by distancing yourself from the "bad Yankees"--if you've got a northern accent, you're going to face sh!t from people no matter what kind of person you are.

It's definitely a "Maybe not.". Buckhead has been taken over by the 'hip hop' crowd and the associated gunfire and thuggery that accompany it.
