A 4-year-old fisherman pulled an unusual catch from the Conestoga River in Lancaster County.
James Weaver hauled out a 15-inch piranha while fishing in Leola recently.
Most people believe the biting fish was probably a pet that got too big and was released.
It was pretty hardy to survive the low water temperatures. Usually piranha need warmer water to survive.

If I was the guy in that picture holding that fish I think I'd move my thumb away from its mouth...

Looks like someone's tank got a teeeesy bit too small.
Too bad, he could have taken it to a fish/pet shop and traded it in for some money.

Hmmm... 15 inches is HUGE for a piranha. I had a few a while back and they never did get any bigger than about 5 inches in my 110 gallon tank. They were the red-bellied variety which is the one that schools. Hard to tell from the picture, but that's either a white-bellied Piranha (bigger but less dangerous than the red-bellied) or a Pacu. Pacu's can live in colder water and can grow to the size of a garbage can lid. Mine was about 18 inches when I had to get rid of it. I'm guessing that's a Pacu - head looks wrong for a Piranha.
