NEW YORK (AP) - Three black men who ventured into a historically white neighborhood early Wednesday to steal a car were chased by a man with a baseball bat, police said. One man was beaten and suffered a fractured skull.
The attack happened several hours before dawn in the same section of the borough of Queens as an infamous 1986 beating of three black men whose car had broken down.
In Wednesday's attack, Nicholas Minucci, 21, was being charged with first-degree assault as a hate crime, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a news conference.
The three blacks told investigators they had been looking for a car to steal when they entered the Howard Beach neighborhood. They told police a white man in an SUV passed them in the street, exchanged stares with them and then returned with two friends and a baseball bat before chasing them on foot.
Glen Moore, 20, stumbled to the ground and was beaten, suffering a fractured skull. He was in serious condition. The other two men escaped and summoned police, who scouted the neighborhood with them and spotted the SUV again.
Police stopped the vehicle and found the bat inside. The driver was arrested, and officers were seeking two other suspects.
The hate crime charge is punishable by a minimum of eight years in prison. The district attorney said that he didn't know if Minucci had a lawyer and that he would be arraigned Thursday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he and the police commissioner would not allow such "an ugly incident" to divide the city.
"We've accomplished too much to let that happen," he said, noting that the area had been free of such crimes for at least two years.
On Dec. 20, 1986, a group of white teenagers attacked three black men who were stranded in the neighborhood when their car stalled.
One of the men was fatally struck by a car as he fled. Another was beaten with a baseball bat and tree branches. The third escaped.
The attack ignited racial tension in New York and was compared to a lynching by then-Mayor Ed Koch. Eight of the teenagers were convicted or pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter, assault, conspiracy and rioting.

[[Oh, and btw genius, Guido is not a slur on LI, it's a description]]
Oh, and btw Einstein, Guido is a slur against Italians.
You might be on to something. For example, If a person of one race or ethnicity chooses to steal the property of a person of another race or ethnicity, could it be considered a hate crime? And could the accused attackers get off if they claim that their actions were based not upon hate, but on tough love with no hate involved?
How much do you want to bet that people spotted them walking down the street yanking door handles, and called the locals to make it stop.
When I lived in Brooklyn, nobody ever called the cops, and within a few years there was almost no crime within 5 blocks of my home.
Why? They criminals were scared s**tless of the residents.
And that was a good thing, IMHO.
Don't go into people's neighborhoods to steal cars, you got no problems with get hit over the head. Bada bing, bada boom, #$%*ing problem solved.
The outer boroughs of New York are a different planet. White people actualy defend themselves instead of cower in fear at the site of a minority, and everyone knows it. The racial "tensions" cut both ways, and everyone knows who doesn't and doesn't like everyone else. There is no political correctness. It is out in the open. Sometimes I miss that place. At least you knew where everyone stood instead of people hiding behind some kind of "tolerant" facade like our lexus liberal friends who couldn't find Compton on a map.
I stopped reading after the part where it says they went to steal a car...
They got what was coming to them for all I care.
The mayor and the cops know it. They will prosecute anyway, to head off the race hustlers at the pass, Justice be dammed.
Anybody still living in NYC ought to have his head examined.
The time of day shows their intent to take advantage of a society that was at peace and was for the most part asleep. Society has had to pay a terrible price for security such as lights locks etc. sence the open housing law went into effect. So it is clear we could save billions in electral power to drive security devises with a few baseball bats, the good thing about baseball bats is once used they can be used again, renewable energy so to speak
How about, "Black Car thieves Beaten in Queens".
Criminals caught roaming an innocent neighborhood are
repelled by residents protecting their neighborhood...
Cops arrest citizens..
Wonder what kind of priors the theives have...
Rape, Burglary, Bad interior decorating?
Rodney King was in the wrong neighborhood looking to committ
a crime when he got caught..
He got his sorry azz beat and a couple million dollars..
Should be a law suit coming down on this one as well...
Paging Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson...
It's unfortunate but the media only plays it up when black Americans are assaulted by white Americans never when the reverse happens which is more frequent.
I am guessing he didn't have a permit to own a bat.
I am guessing he didn't have a permit to own a bat.
So much for letting my kid join little league.
Why is this incident news?
This is what the press wants a certain 'group' to read into all of this
They want to incite riots...gets great press...brings in the advertising
Reporters get famous and the Ad men get bonuses
They could market the "Howard Beach Diet" show a perp in the hospital with his jaws wired shut only able to eat through a straw
A person could loose a lot of weight in a short time like that.
Then there is the "Howard Beach" excercise plan...show a bunch of fatties running from guys with baseball bats
You might hate jogging but running for your life will give anyone who hates excercise the motivation they need to get out there and run run run...
Pound them pounds....they will melt off
No kidding. In Delaware County, PA, a lady called 911 as she watched a vehicle being stolen in broad daylight. The operator told the caller that she dialled 911 for the city (Philladelphia) and not the county (Delaware county) and to redial. The lady did and got the same operator. This occurred 3 times and the caller argued with the operator to just send police or connect her to the appropriate 911 operator. The operator hung up on the lady and the car was stolen.
Moore honorably discharged from the Army two years ago was charged with grand larceny in July 2003 for car theft. His two friends also both have prior arrests, cops said
I'm a Nu Yawka myself. Howard Beach is all Italian-American. It is what it is. You don't go into that neighborhood with the intent of committing crime. Its old school.
