The .45 ACP is, IMHO, the most effective overall pistol round.

Keep your eye on the .45 GAP pistols coming out now for carry. The .45 GAP produces virtually identical ballistics to the .45 ACP and can be packed in a smaller platform. It looks to be one of the nicest developments in the CCW world in some time.
