The Code of Hammurabi had this nifty little ditty ~ I think it's kind of like what folks would really like to do:

"If any one bring an accusation against a man, and the accused go to the river and leap into the river, if he sink in the river his accuser shall take possession of his house.

But if the river prove that the accused is not guilty, and he escape unhurt, then he who had brought the accusation shall be put to death, while he who leaped into the river shall take possession of the house that had belonged to his accuser.

For what it's worth, it looks like Souter and company are working their way through the Code of Hammurabi and reversing all of its standards ~ which is pretty egregious since this code was one of the earliest efforts of a society that invented civilization, writing, and the keeping of records.

BTW, one of the big points threaded throughout the Code of Hammurabi is that where someone has attempted to USE government authority to take someone else's property for his personal use, the penalty shall be death.

It's hard to believe that we have a Supreme Court that says that we should now have as a law of the land something considered to be a capital crime at the very foundations of civilization.
