Pastor aims to send rabbits to feed North Koreans 29 Jun 2005 06:52:31 GMT

SEOUL, June 29 (Reuters) - A South Korean pastor is aiming to cut into North Korea's severe food shortage by sending the reclusive state 1.2 million rabbits to eat.

Cho Soon-tae from the Evangelical Movement for National Unification said rabbits are tasty, resilient and reproduce, well, like rabbits, which would make them an ideal food source for North Korea.

With the help of seven pastors from leading South Korean churches, Cho secured more than $1 million to buy rabbits at a little under $1 each in China and transport them to North Korea.

"They will be delivered to the North in August by train from China," Cho said by telephone.

Cho said he had asked permission from South Korean authorities to ship the rabbits and was in talks with officials from the North seeking their permission.

The U.N. World Food Programme has said North Korea is in the midst of a severe food shortage that may quickly grow worse as food stocks and international aid dry up. Many of the country's 22 million people rely on food aid.

Cho said he thought about how he could help alleviate food shortages in the North after a visit to a kindergarten there that was sparsely attended because of malnutrition among the students.

If all goes well, Cho is looking to send more rabbit aid.

Rabbits can eat grass and derive nourishment from it, unlike people. As long as there is enough grass, the rabbits will do fine.
However, the North Koreans will probably execute them as spies...

Rabbits eat a lot of things that humans can't or won't and turn it into usable protein. The real problem is that the bunnies will likely end up butchered and served to North Korea's army, and the starving masses won't see a one.

I'd applaud the idea if it werent for the fact Kim seems intent on cloistering his people to death

BTW - rabbits will eat straw, grasses & weeds.... things we consider non edible -

I read that if a person were to only eat rabbit they would starve. Somehow it takes (human) body fat to digest the rabbit meat because it is so lean.

Food shortages are caused by a lack of freedom and a lack of rule of law. With freedom and rule of law, people grow plenty of food for themselves.

Kim Jong il may disallow it in the end. He may figure too many people eating too many rabbits near the Chinese border, might cause a spring in their steps, and they may just be able to hop hop hop right over the barbed wire and out of the People's Heaven on Earth (sic).

I actually admire Pastor Cho, he has a well thought out program that would allow the people to help themselves out of starvation. He just doesn't seem to realize that NK is an evil regime with an evil leader who does not care how many people die to further his cause.

I used to hunt rabbits years ago, and remember that we had to wear gloves and be really careful cleaning and preparing them for the pot.

It seems that they can carry some really wicked disease - "Tularemia" or something like that, IIRC, which is a particularly nasty, and potentially fatal, pathinogen.

Much like salmonilla in chicken, cooking seems to kill it off all right, but contact with the raw meat or tissue can be hazzardous.

If anyone in NK gets a dose of it, even if it's accidental, I have no doubt that they'll make a major accusitory hullabaloo about "Biological Warfare" being perpetrated by the donors.

Weren't rabbits introduced to Australia years ago for about the same reason? And didnt' they essentially take the place over, eating all the crops and vegitation in sight, nearly causing the famine that they were supposed to prevent?

These well - meaning evangalists in the ROK (anything to do with the "Moonies", BTW?) might want to check with the Auzzies before investing too much in this charity.

Of course then again... maybe they already have. };^{)~

The rabbits were a disaster in Australia - there are thousands of contiguous miles of "rabbit-proof" fence attempting to keep them out of areas that they have not already infested.

Dunno about the disease, though. Wouldn't surprise me. But is that an issue in farm raised rabbit? In any case, it is a nice, but futile, gesture.

Right, the rabbits will eat the grass and tree bark that most rural N. Koreans need for food. Meanwhile, dear leader Kim Jr. has a weight problem from too much rich food.
