Much the same thing had happened to the nation of France, in the years between the Franco-Prussian War and the Great War of 1914-1918, and was accelerated even more in the intervening years between 1919 and 1939.
Children were encouraged by their mothers and nannies in those years to "soi raisonable" as an end in itself, a paradigm to which all children should subscribe. As a result, the French, once a great warrior nation with a world-straddling empire under the House of Bourbon and later Napoleon, became the nation of surrender monkeys, for which they are famed more than either their cheese or wine.
These thoughts are not at all original with me. I read the works of Henry Miller, years ago, before they were even legal in the US (Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Sexus, Nexus and Plexus). These works were famous for their scatological content, but beneath that, Henry Miller made some very penetrating observations on the psyche of the French people, and the seeming contradictions in their lives.
What happened in France in the "Bohemian period" was very much like what happened in the US during the 1960's and 1970's. Hedonism, sexual license, and habitual drug use had become the norm of life, and not its relatively rare exception. Now France has moved into its final surrender, giving up Christianity and allowing Islam to fill the vacuum.
Wasn't Peter Yarrow busted in the 1960s for the Statutory Rape of a Teenage girl after a concert?
