NBC changes schedule to accomodate President
WBIR ^ | 6/28/05

Posted on 06/28/2005 1:27:15 PM PDT by areafiftyone

President Bush is marking the first anniversary of Iraq's sovereignty with an address from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, this evening and NBC is juggling its schedule in order to be able to carry it live.

The President plans to try to ease Americans' growing doubts about the Iraq mission. The White House says he will meet with the families of 33 troops. He'll then make his address before as many as 700 soldiers at Fort Bragg.

The speech will be carried live on WBIR and the NBC Network at 8:00 PM EDT. The premiere of the latest edition of “Average Joe”, originally scheduled for 8 will move to 10:00 PM following “I Want To Be A Hilton”.

It is still the law. Networks broadcast on PUBLIC airwaves. Just imagine if radio had refused to carry FDR because their top rated "Amos & Andy" show was set - just because all FDR wanted to do was "reassure" the public something about all we had to fear, yada yada yada? We live in a different time, unfortunately.

I think the Gong Show would make them nervous, since so many of us have sounded the gong for NBC. ;)

No. Of course that's one of the many differences between conservatives and Republicans. I really could care less what the man has to say. And I don't mean that completely derogatorily. It's just a PR speech to tell us all how the administration feels the WOST is going.

Think about it. Do you really need a speech for that? It doesn't matter how one feels either way, the speech won't change anyone's opinion so really all it boils down to is a politician's speech rallying the troops.

See my post above re: FDR for some historical context - and I say that as a conservative that does NOT think very highly of FDR. I think the "libertarian" comment is apt - there is sometimes a fine line between freedom and anarchy.

I would think so. That is why I was surprised to even have that questioned.......every network should stop their programming and carry it.

I'm sure they will but I don't know who it will be. It might be Pelosi but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure there is a formal rebuttal planned. You can read excerpts from the advance copy of the speech here: http://www.sierratimes.com/rss/newswire.php?article=/news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050628/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush&time=1119991154&feed=us

OK, I didn't write this, but, here's what I'd like to hear tonight....
My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed...

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains everyone not on the first list...

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France.

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe China.

I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York .

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security. So start doing something with your oil.

We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin."

Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. It is time to eliminate World Cup Soccer from America. To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic.

God bless America. Thank you and good night.

Bill, here's another "meaningless PR war speech"

But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period--I am addressing myself to the School--surely from this period of ten months, this is the lesson:

Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

We stood all alone a year ago, and to many countries it seemed that our account was closed, we were finished. All this tradition of ours, our songs, our School history, this part of the history of this country, were gone and finished and liquidated.

Very different is the mood today. Britain, other nations thought, had drawn a sponge across her slate. But instead our country stood in the gap. There was no flinching and no thought of giving in; and by what seemed almost a miracle to those outside these Islands, though we ourselves never doubted it, we now find ourselves in a position where I say that we can be sure that we have only to persevere to conquer.

You sang here a verse of a School Song: you sang that extra verse written in my honour, which I was very greatly complimented by and which you have repeated today. But there is one word in it I want to alter - I wanted to do so last year, but I did not venture to. It is the line: "Not less we praise in darker days."

I have obtained the Head Master's permission to alter darker to sterner. "Not less we praise in sterner days."

Do not let us speak of darker days: let us speak rather of sterner days. These are not dark days; these are great days--the greatest days our country has ever lived; and we must all thank God that we have been allowed, each of us according to our stations, to play a part in making these days memorable in the history of our race.

I daresay, without Churchill's "meaningless speeches" (and lend-lease), Great Britain wouldn't have made it.
