The important question that is never answered in these articles about Chinese protests is "what is the protest about?" If these guys only want the government to reduce the price of rice, then these protests are not all that significant.

Thanks, I was going to ask if this story had been confirmed by other media sources because frankly, I just don't believe anything that comes out of the Epoch Times.

It's like reading the People's Daily but from the other end of the spectrum.

It is interesting that the authorities don't seem to strike back hard on these incidents -- this is exactly what the lessons of history must teach them are the most dangerous acts against the rulers of the Middle Kingdom.

Of course, if they are planning to take Taiwan soon, then they may reckon on nationalism as a quick fix, but I don't think that it will suffice as a cure.

"If you kill one of them, I will pay 300,000 yuan.

Why does this quote make me think of Hillary Clinton?

What is the Epoch Times? I see from the link that it's Korean. Why would it be untrustworthy about China?

I had an interesting discussion a few weeks back with an Army Officer who is a China FAO (Foreign Area Officer). He's of the opinion that China may well face a disintegration along the lines of the USSR. They have many minority groups in far flung places who don't like being ruled from Peking.

None of the explainations make any sense to me. Why on earth would that many people turn out because of a small incident like that?

Sounds to me like the people are just waiting for anything that will allow them to riot. The thing that ought to worry the Chinese authorities is that the crowd appears to me more middle class.
