Korea Stops Funding for Neocon Think Tank
The Korea Foundation has ended its support for the American Enterprise Institute, a rightwing U.S. think tank credited with being the brains behind the war on Iraq, Foreign Minster Ban Ki-moon told the National Assembly's Unification, Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee on Monday. It reportedly did so at the ruling partys request.
The AEI is the leading neoconservative think tank with close links to the Bush administration. Its brain children include the invasion of Iraq, tax cuts and planned redeployments of U.S. forces around the world. Vice President Dick Cheney, former Deputy Secretary of State John Bolton, and "Axis of Evil" speechwriter David Frum all have AEI backgrounds. Reviled by critics as a neocon bastion, President George W. Bush has called it a collection of America's best minds.
The Korea Foundation, a body under the Foreign Ministry, has given US$1.4 million to the AEI since 1992. A foundation official said it gives money to major Washington think tanks to support research on Korea. He said the National Assembly had asked it to end contributions to the AEI.
Ruling party officials dislike the direction of AEI activity. They seem particular allergic to senior fellow Nicholas Eberstadt, who told the Seoul Shinmun in November that Cheong Wa Dae and the Korean National Security Council viewed U.S. President Bush's reelection as an emergency, adding he could name those who were praying for Bushs defeat.
Cheong Wa Dae expressed displeasure at the time saying the statement was groundless, and the ruling party demanded an end to funding of the AEI.
In the recent edition of American Enterprise, Eberstadt said the core of the Korean government had demonstrated it was unforgivably anti-American and called Seoul a runaway U.S. ally. On June 6, he attacked President Roh Moo-hyun and his predecessor Kim Dae-jung, saying Korea's last two presidents, two self-proclaimed fighters for human rights, ignored the plight of North Korean refugees.
The AEI has an annual budget of about US$30 million.
I am not sure that Cheney would come around.

That's okay, we know there was never really an independent Korea. There's only one China.
And since Korea was a vassal kingdome at one point in history, that means it must necessarily be a vassal now. Koreans just don't know it yet, but I'm sure China will eventually disabuse them of any idea to the contrary.
Guam. Let's pull back and defend the SK's from Guam.
Just pull the troops to Taiwan, and Japan. Both are willing to defend themselves (Japan is starting to change their Constitution to make this easier for them to do).
Does Eberstadt have an email?
Check this http://www.aei.org/about/filter.,contentID.20038142214500071/default.asp
and try NEberstadt
Thanks--I might have a little info that he could use.
US Think Tanks, which have any kind of influence or say over internal US governmental decisions, should NOT be funded by Foreign Governments or Foreign Agents in the first place.
Thanks for stating the obvious.
