Russia has ordered an inquiry into a 16th century Jewish religious law to ascertain whether it constitutes racist incitement and anti-Russian material, a media report said. Russias state prosecutor has ordered an examination into shulhan arukh, a code of Jewish Halakhic law compiled in the 16th century, and a probe against a Jewish umbrella outfit in Russia for distributing a Russian translation of an abbreviation of the religious law.
The probe was launched after some 500 public figures, including members of the Nationalist Rodina Party, in a letter to the prosecutors office urged to outlaw the Jewish religion and all its organisations operating in Russia, daily Ha'aretz reported.
The affair being closely watched in Israel has raised concerns for the Jews of Russia, who have come under increased anti-semitic attacks recently, the report said.

Attorneys from the state prosecutors office questioned Rabbi Zinovy Kogan, chairman of the Congress of Jewish organisations, last Thursday to explain the contents of shulhan arukh, especially its treatment of non-Jews, the report said.
The prosecutor had earlier rejected requests of Jewish organisations to open an investigation into those who were behind the letter asking for outlawing the religion and its organisations.
What madness is this??
Howard Dean asked and evangelical how she could vote for him since he was sure, since she was an evangelical Christian, she wouldn't agree with his stance on civil rights for all Americans and the right of a woman to choose the health care she desired.

Didn't the Germans try this in WW2? Some people never learn.
If you'd like to be on or off this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.
So are you going to play the "Putin, Christian Defender of Civilization" card on this one, or the "See, Iran isn't so bad, they even allow Jews more freedom than Russia" card?
If this has legs and Russia starts cracking down on Judaism and other non-Orthodox faiths, then Russia has lost my support. Official Russia, that is, not the people.
Any insight?
I posted a story about a month ago about Russian prosecutor investigating a book of stories and poems by Pushkin because they were erotic - some one or some group saw this book for sale at a book store and filed a complaint. The prosecutor has no flexibility in the matter - his office has to investigate.
I am against all censorship - but this is a tale taken by the western press to illustrate that Putin is turning Russia into a police state. Just like in the USA when the FCC gets a complaint - the Russian authorities probably got a complaint and thus have to open an investigation.
Our own FCC for example had to investigate NBC's opening ceremonies of the Athens Olympics because some yahoos were offended by reproductions of naked Greek statues and writhing Greek dancers.
Someone probably purchased the book and read the following and called the authorities.
There is a disinfo campaign out there to turn people against Russia be bringing up old Cold War imagry like Pushkin is being banned or something.

WARNING: This is a high volume ping list
Wow, George Soros has some powerful mojo. Russian law has an automatic investigation of complaints - file a complaint it has to be investigated - Canada has such a law too. This fringe party has found a way to use the legal mechanisim to gain some publicity which fuels the Soros financed/influenced disinfo news beast.

Thank you for that information!
This is terrifying...Neo-nazis are on the rise strongly in Russia, as are communists. Hrm, frying pan or fire, rock or hard place?
Preferences anyone?
Pussia ping...YIKES
No it is not - ease up on the wanking.
Russia ping...YIKES
You can tell it is disinfo - check the headline of the article - people are easily manipulated by headlines.
