IT USED TO BE EASIER to judge people unfairly. A cursory scan of their record collection revealed secrets. Telltale copies of REO Speedwagon's ''Hi Infidelity" were known to wither budding relationships overnight. Soul-deep conversation and physical attraction could not compensate for the nagging doubt planted by ''Frampton Comes Alive." ''I must have been really drunk at the time" did not explain away Air Supply's ''Greatest Hits."

What I found interesting about this article is that young people today apparently apply a "music litmus test" on potential dates. If my wife had inspected my music collection on our first date, she might have run away screaming when she saw all those AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and Cheap Trick records. Likewise, had I known she was heavily into Neil Diamond, Huey Lewis and Phil Collins, well, I might have taken her home early that night.

Oh heck, this happened back in the late '50s/early '60's too! The guy you're dating wants you to hear Stan Kenton's wall-of-sound on his new hi-fi (this was before stereo...). No thanks!

Eclecticism in music seems to be the norm today. Avantgarde is dead and what passes as "progressive" is old hat within a week or two.
I don't anyone who blinks anymore when they hear Huey Lewis and Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert within the same playlist.
Well it's at least something to write about.

well, I might have taken her home early that night. This lends itself to two different interpretations. Your home, or hers?

With iTunes, I find myself collecting songs that I supposedly love, but never EVER listen to. This caused me to think about music differently, and now I accept vinyl and cassette tapes as equally acceptable to CDs.
How can old media be any worse if I never even listen to the digital version?

I'm old enough to remember "hi-fi's" and when you had to go to somebody's house to listen to records. Music just wasn't portable back then. Unless you counted 8-tracks, and then you needed a car.
I remember getting my first portable audiocasette player back in the mid-70s. It weighed about 10 pounds and it took about 7 size "D" batteries. I was about 14 back then and my first purchase was Led Zeppelin II.

Never mind my Beefheart, acoustic Marc Bolan, King Crimson, Strawbs, or classical music jags I sometimes go on. I keep up appearances with Tull, Yes, Stones, Beatles, Steely Dan, Allmans, and other "classic" rock (the politically correct term for "oldies") and some (very little) new stuff from time to time. Lately, I've been on a Perez Prado, Donovan, and Ben Folds kick. Don't ask why, I have no idea.
Only two concerts planned for this year: Steve Miller at Musickfest in August, and Nearfest in July

Looks like we might have to start registering our iPods!
If iPods are outlawed, only outlaws will have iPods.

Good point. iPod mini's are definitely for chicks. No self-respecting man would carry a mini. I pack a 40gig strapped in a leather holster on my belt.

I recharge my battery just about every night. I haven't had to replace it yet but I did have to take my iPod apart to reseat it (I dropped it and the connector came loose). Only took about 5 minutes. So no big deal to replace when the time comes.
