Chinese dragon awakens (prompting fears that Beijing will attack Taiwan)

China is building its military forces faster than U.S. intelligence and military analysts expected, prompting fears that Beijing will attack Taiwan in the next two years, according to Pentagon officials. U.S. defense and intelligence officials say all the signs point in one troubling direction: Beijing then will be forced to go to war with the United States, which has vowed to defend Taiwan against a Chinese attack. China's military buildup includes an array of new high-technology weapons, such as warships, submarines, missiles and a maneuverable warhead designed to defeat U.S. missile defenses. Recent intelligence reports also show that China has stepped up military exercises involving amphibious assaults, viewed as another sign that it is preparing for an attack on Taiwan. "There's a growing consensus that at some point in the mid-to-late '90s, there was a fundamental shift in the sophistication, breadth and re-sorting of Chinese defense planning," said Richard Lawless, a senior China-policy maker in the Pentagon. "And what we're seeing now is a manifestation of that change in the number of new systems that are being deployed, the sophistication of those systems and the interoperability of the systems." China's economy has been growing at a rate of at least 10 percent for each of the past 10 years, providing the country's military with the needed funds for modernization. The combination of a vibrant centralized economy, growing military and increasingly fervent nationalism has transformed China into what many defense officials view as a fascist state.

Energy supply a factor For China, Taiwan is not the only issue behind the buildup of military forces. Beijing also is facing a major energy shortage that, according to one Pentagon study, could lead it to use military force to seize territory with oil and gas resources.

With their focus on controlling if not outright conquering both the Strait of Malacca as well as the Strait of Hormuz, the PRC (with their Pakistani and Burmese partners in crime) are intent on become masters of the spiggot.

As I see it, Siberia has been horribly underdeveloped due to the inability of Moscow to motivate European Russians or even southern minorities to move East. To them, it may actually be part of the plan to partner with the PRC to provide the warm bodies to develop it more intensely. Is a confederation, ala the one or yore between Poland and Lithuania, in the offing, between Russia and the PRC? Many pooh pooh this notion because on first blush it seems so wild. I learned a long time ago not to do that.

The PRC are arranging to have the one thing that Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini lacked - reliable and massive quantities of oil. As for Russia, they've already got it. The Trans-Asian Axis would conquer from a position of the strong core, exploding outward, with massive internal resources both material and human, from the outset. Whereas, Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini were trying to conquer from the periphery, a naturally disadvantageous position, made worse by their abject lack of internally held resources.

It's what they have wanted for over 400 years. Anyone who thinks that these "kinder and gentler" seeming technocrats in Moscow today have given up that dream is dangerously naive.

Von Clausewitz would have written that it is insane. Von Clausewitz would have counciled that end to end mass firings in both the military and its civilian overlordship are needed, in order to root out all the goo goo eyed, mush headed liberals and utopian globalist intellectuals who get in the way of preparing for the next great war.

If they get Unocal, then rare earth magnets for guided missile systems too.

There comes a point where even to most doctrinaire free marketeer needs to support the notion that a bunch of aging ex hippies and those of that generation influenced by them, who currently run our corporations, and who buy into the most infantile "flat earth" and "endless beyond history" econoutopias, need to be controlled in some fashion. Far short of fascism, some sort of imposition to stop this insanity and suicidal behavior, is needed.

You and millions of others probably think the same. You've been setup for a sucker punch. We need to be able to render all of China's key assets radioactive when necessary. By shorting Walmart stock at the appropriate time, we can pay for it.

Anything making a hostile move in the Taiwan Straits needs to be vaporized without warning. We need to start tracking all Chinese naval assets including containerships to be able to target and destroy them immediately.

It wouldn't hurt to have a few oopsies in advance for tests. At some point we need to impose a standoff notice against any ship originating from China. Unload everything destined for the West Coast and search it. Do that on an island in the Pacific. At the same time forbid any Chinese ship from entering an East Coast port.

Not reacting immediately to China's change of law with respect to Taiwan was a huge mistake. China is playing us for suckers.

And in a few months, they'll have the overland infrastructure to do some incredibly nasty things. People who wonder how it was that Hitler overwhelmed France so rapidly, would look at this situation, and see that this situation is an absolute invitation to something on an even grander scale, done far more quickly. Imagine the events of Summer 1940, compressed into less than one week!

But Mr. "Death Symbol" Pale Horse, on another thread, you were berating me for my involvement in high tech business, mostly past, during my preawakening phase, pre 1996. Yet here, you downplay the threats to the West. Well which is it? Are you pro or anti Western? What is the role that you will play on this thread? What is your role play here today?

And they are absolutely insane with their belief that the "Taidu" are some smoldering relic of WW2 Japanese "imperialism." The blood lust and grudge reminds me of the grudge that the French held against Germany due to the 1870 invasion. They just cannot put the past behind, and have all but justified, in their minds, total war against "Greater Japan" which of course, according to them, includes both Japan and "the Taidu faction" on Taiwan. Westerners downplay this at our peril.

Go try, as an American, for example, to start a business or buy land in Thailand. Sure it can be done, but there is still a real sense of sovereign control there. It's one thing for their leaders to be kowtowing (as they have been since the US abandoned our bases there) to the PRC, but quite another to become a true vassal state. Push comes to shove, the Thai royals, as well as the military, will not go that final step willingly. There is to be no Anschluss. Force will be brought to bear.

Indeed it does. Let us face the fact that non proliferation has utterly failed. Given that, why does the West not proliferate to countries like Taiwan?

A "One World Government" - but not the overblown, stupidly feared "NWO" type - instead, the real type, based on a Trans-Asian Confederation that has conquered the world.

Actually it is very easy to start a company in Thailand. There are also a number of ways for a foreigner to own land in Thailand although there is no reason to go through the trouble since land can be leased almost indefinitely. The laws in Thailand are much less restrictive than in most Asian countries.

Push comes to shove, the Thai royals, as well as the military, will not go that final step willingly.

Of course, there is no reason for them to. Thais are quite skilled at playing different interests against each other. It is a large part of the reason Thailand is independent today.

"But Mr. "Death Symbol" Pale Horse, on another thread, you were berating me for my involvement in high tech business, mostly past, during my preawakening phase, pre 1996."

You stated that you were DOING business with Russia. Now you're not, except for SOME undefined present business that you are PRESENTLY engaged in.

"Yet here, you downplay the threats to the West."

Do you support making English the official language of this country, as I do?

If you do, do everyone on FR a BIG favor and learn how to read it before shooting your mouth off.

I said that there was more hot air than fact in the article, and I specifically said that it was likely due to bad editing. That is ALL that I said. I do not comment on whether or not China is as the article portrays, only that the article argues its point poorly, if at all.

"Well which is it? Are you pro or anti Western?"

I don't trade with people I consider the enemies of the United States, so I conclude that I am pro West. You, however, DO trade with those you consider the enemies of the West. So, are you pro or anti Western? I conclude that you are anti Western, and that your extreme hostility to those who disagree with your rhetoric is a projection of your guilt and shame.

"What is the role that you will play on this thread? What is your role play here today?"

Pointing out bad writing and worse logic. Which makes you the perfect target... :)
