The Bush administration appears ready to help guide the UN through an era of reform, even as the President and members of his party voice displeasure and at times disgust with the international organisation.
The President will not attend Sundays celebration of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the UN charter in San Francisco.
The White House rejected requests for the President or a high-ranking surrogate and is scheduled to send Sichan Siv, the US representative to the UN Economic and Social Council.
President Bushs absence from an international celebration in a city where 85 per cent of voters cast ballots against him will surprise neither students of foreign policy nor domestic politics.
Yet it raises some doubt about Washingtons commitment to the UN, as the 191-member international body celebrates its diamond anniversary.
In the past week alone, the House voted to halve the US contribution to the UN, unless significant reforms are made, and the Senate refused to confirm Bushs choice as US ambassador to the UN, leaving the post vacant for the fifth consecutive month.
"The President will not attend Sundays celebration of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the UN charter in San Francisco."
Good.
Good.
"The White House rejected requests for the President or a high-ranking surrogate "
Good!
Lol
It's unanimous
Celebration? Seriously -- what is there to celebrate about the UN?
Hopefully, its removal from prime New York City real estate (and the withdrawal of all American monies)?
"President Bushs absence from an international celebration in a city where 85 per cent of voters cast ballots against him will surprise neither students of foreign policy nor domestic politics."
This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the city the UN is located in. If the UN was located in Crawford, Texas, the President would decline. This writer needs a clue.
They should have sent Bolton...LOL!!
Celebration? Seriously -- what is there to celebrate about the UN?
The fact that they know they can rape thousands of women in Africa.
high ranking surrogate.
Send Pelosi.
"The fact that they know they can rape thousands of women in Africa."
And get away with it!!!
Send him anyways.
Funding cut in half and no US Rep at the UN. Let's just cut the funding all together and throw them out. Their Gangsters and Murders and they have us paying for it!!
Yes, thank you for correcting that for me.
Washington is disgusted with the corrupt, fatuous, insidious UN. And in this, they are far behind where most of the aware US citizens stand, i.e. get the damn thing out of the US and bust it down to the debating society status it should have. The idea that the UN (Security Council, General Assembly, Secretariat, Councils, Standing Bodies, or Organizations) carry any prestige, authority, or legitimacy is a dying myth.
Gotta love Goerge Bush - but don't worry Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy will be there (even if Ted attends only to take part in the toast!)
