Should Hillsborough County libraries direct young people to outside agencies and Web sites where they can explore questions about their sexuality, possibly without parental consent? Hillsborough County Commissioner Ronda Storms doesn't think so. Storms said Friday a pamphlet distributed in the Gay Pride Month display at West Gate Regional Library bolsters the county's policy decision banning promotion of gay pride events.
``It confirms to me that this is the right thing to do,'' Storms said, steering the policy away from charges of discrimination and censorship.
The pamphlet ``Lesbian & Gay Support Groups: You are not alone!'' includes telephone numbers and Web addresses for groups such as Also Out Youth, the National Youth Advocacy Coalition and The Other Queer Page. The pamphlet contains an ``OK to be Gay'' logo.
``In my opinion, it engages Hillsborough County in very high-risk behavior, not to mention encouraging children to engage in very high-risk behavior,'' Storms said.
She suggested the pamphlet directs children to people and places without their parents' knowledge. The list of Web addresses includes Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays and Gay Parent Magazine. Storms obtained the pamphlet Friday, nine days after proposing the policy to ``abstain from acknowledging, promoting and participating'' in gay pride recognition or events. The gay pride display at West Gate and a presentation of gay-themed books at the John F. Germany branch downtown were ordered removed after the June 15 vote. But gay rights activists and others continue to challenge the policy.
The NAACP's St. Petersburg branch issued a statement Friday to the gay and lesbian rights group, Equality Florida, denouncing the commission's decision.
``We want you to know that we stand with you in your courageous fight against bigotry and prejudice,'' the statement said. ``The actions taken by the Hillsborough County Commission are an affront to us all who are actively fighting against racism, anti-Semitism, bigotry and injustice.''
Storms and Commissioner Tom Scott, who is black, have said gay rights and civil rights are not the same. Also Friday, the county's Citizen Advisory Committee agreed to discuss the policy at its July 22 meeting.
``The question is what does it mean for the county and the county employees, and does the CAC agree with that approach,'' committee member Charles ``Chip'' Fletcher said. ``The CAC is asking for information to make a decision whether or not to ask commissioners to reconsider their position.''
The gays are out recruiting.
What no position yet from the ACLU, People for the American Way, MoveOn.org, etc. yet?
Time to draw the Line on these Sicko's and their Dangerous lifestyle. Bigotry and Prejudice ---- BS, They are Sick in the head, twisted. Their lifestyle goes against the Natural Order of Things and Gods Laws.
The Progressive Liberals, and Homosexuals have one thing in common - They do not believe in God, Otherwise they would keep the Laws of God, which is against this Lifestyle.
Gay Pride Month - hooey. There shouldn't even be a Gay Pride hour.
ping
This is common place in many large cities. I remember seeing such fliers in libraries 15 years ago.
Imagine a Heterosexual support group of middle aged men distributing fliers to encourage underage girls to call and discuss sexual identity. S*** would hit the proverbial fan faster than you can say "statutory rape".
Before anyone gets self-righteous about this matter, they should remember that gay and gender-variant adolescents have an appalling suicide rate, even appproaching 50 percent. It does not seem productive, to deny them access to counseling.
I see the that was presented as a link to suicide prevention resources. The existing evidence does suggest that gay and gender variant individuals are that way from early childhood. In other words, they know they are different from an early age. Some of the evidence does suggest the difference has a biological origin, originating within the womb.
I know that evidence will not please some people, but the evidence does suggest the need for further biological research. Prenatal endocrinology is an area of primary concern, as well as some research into multi-factorial genetics.
what is it with people who run libraries?
later pingout.
50%? Are you out of your mind?
Nothing but "gay" talking points.
And for those whose minds aren't closed to truth:

Root Causes, Homosexual Consequences
If kids who think they are homosexual were told the truth - that no one has to be "gay" - that there are tens of thousands of former homosexuals - maybe they wouldn't try to commit suicide.
Gay Pride Hour...Isn't that program on NPR Saturday right after "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me?"
"Storms Irate At homosexual Flier At A Library".
Is that part of their JOB description and requirements?
I see this as nothing less than government cooperation in the open promotion of deviant and unhealthy behavior. Allowing this promotion to occur at a taxpayer-funded institution is a signal to parents everywhere that their rights in counseling and raising their own children will not be respected.
I can't even imagine being a parent and having to answer questions about this topic to a pre-teen or young teenager. They're confused enough about things as it is.
It's time to eliminate libraries. They are just another socialist give away. Read books at taxpayers expense.
