This is a massive abuse of the Patriot Act, not to mention being ferociously anti-male.

Please say you didn't think the Patriot Act was going to be limited to terrorism.

LOL, so true.
Who needs a passport when it's easy entering this country.
The male illegals got it made, because if they get in trouble with so call child support all they have to do is run back to Mexico , get new fake ID, SSN cards, driver license, green card, etc., and re-enter in different location. I hear about this all the time, and on top of that get free AFDC,housing, legal clinic, jobs and medical..
Now, if you are a American Father & Veteran(in most cases)
, and run into child support and get into heavy debt and charge with numberous other fees(like lawyer cost, court cost, blood test, visist cost, afdc repayment, added with filing fees, and interest rates on all of the above,etc..)
If you are NOT rich, or middle class to pay them off FAST , before the interest rates kills you for life....

You (American Father/Veteran) are alone, and NO gov't help at all. What is wrong with that picture....

This is one main reason why suicide/murder of fathers is out of control, since the mid 60's...

After the hearing Moss told United Press International that the department already checked all passport applicants against a database that contained the names of nearly 50,000 fugitives, and 3 million deadbeat parents who owed child support.

Did anybody actually read the article? The deadbeats, moms and dads, are already on a no passport list. Your headline is not the original and it is misleading.

You're absolutely correct. Women can be just as irresponsible as men. That does not change what I said about low-end deadbeat dads. Middle class guys basically pay up, so they're not really the problem.

Yes, I wasn't particularly disagreeing with what you wrote. However, again, when you say "Women can be just as irresponsible as men," I feel the urge to point out that NO, unless it's rape, women are as irresponsible as men where kids are born out-of-wedlock (and often as not, in wedlock, when such women aren't committed enough to work through marital problems -- if they're that prone to wanting a divorce from a faithful, non-abusive, but "unfulfilling" husband so they can "find themselves," they shouldn't have gotten married and had kids in the first place).

It's amazing how our society is so quick to stigmatize (and rightly) men who flake-out on their child support duties, but refrains entirely on stigmatizing unmarried women who knowingly risk having children when there are no reliable providers in place. The truth is that such women are heroes only when they have the kids and allow them to be adopted by parents who are mature enough and committed enough to provide for them; otherwise, they're just as irresponsible as the fathers. Our society at present ignores that half of the equation.

It sounds to me that the list is being integrated as one source and to avoid error.....so the "terror list" would actually be a list of individuals who have warrants, are avoiding court judgements in paychild child support and those individuals who are potential terrorists.

I see nothing wrong with this...apprehending criminal suspects before they flee the country is a positive thing and one that will reduce costs of extradition and location.

Not allowing deadbeat parents to get passports is another positive gesture, so the responsibiity of their children will not be borne on the tax paying public.

And I see one integrated database as a positive opposed to having the officer at customs have to access the NCIC, individual state databases AND a terror list.

I don't see this as an extension of the patriot act but as streamlining bureaucracy which saves man hours and costs, therefore affording more financial resources and manpower to ease congested airports, customs lines and protect the homeland security.

There is nothing about arrest or violation of personal rights in this. All it reads is that persons who owe child support can't get a passport and if they have one, then it obviously wasn't obtained legally.

The simple solution? Abide by laws. Pay your child support, don't do anything that will result in a criminal warrant and don't be involved in terrorism.

What is TRULY AMAZING is there are THREE MILLION fathers (or rather it should read "parents" since the author chooses to define "dead beat parents" as "fathers") who don't care about their children and don't accept responsibility for their actions.

Now, THAT is the real issue.......and the one that people with compassion and values should be focusing upon.

Finny, ALL parents have a responsibility to care and provide for their children. Courts recognize low income wages and set the amount of support proportionately. Social Service agencies take this into consideration when rendering financial assistance.

There is NO excuse for any parent to shirk the responsibility of their children, including leaving the country to avoid their responsibilities.

First and foremost is the protection of the child, who has no voice and no choice and didn't ask for the situation in which they have been placed.

Isn't it time adults acted like adults so children can be children? Isn't it time adults stopped thinking about themselves and started thinking about the other lives they are responsible for creating?

I am so tired of Democrat apologists for not assuming personal responsibility. It is a value that every American should have, rather than the continous rationalizations for NOT being responsible.

Gunrunner, if they are dead, then they wouldn't be applying for passports to leave the country to avoid being held responsible for caring for their children, would they?

So, the issue is moot.

He pointed out that those who owed child support were ineligible to be issued a passport until they had paid

So much for freedom of movement that is a pillar of the US citizen's rights. This makes a deadbeat dad little more than a slave and a prisoner inside the US.

Orlando, I agree there are problems with illegals and we need to deal with that. However, the "deadbeat parent" problem is a wholly different situation all together.

1) You only get into heavy debt if you fail to pay or didn't take responsibility from the get-go.

2) Costs from going to court (attorney's fees/court costs) can be avoided or minimized if you manage your own affairs properly.

3) Blood tests should be unnecessary in the only situation into which children should be born: monogamous marriage. Mess around in any other situation and you don't have the right to complain about the costs.

4) AFDC repayment--what kind of father allows his kids to go on the dole anyway?

5) Interest rates, again don't get into the situation.

It's very simple. Don't screw around until you're married, and if you separate from your wife, step up to the plate immediately instead of waiting for a court to do it for you.

It all comes around to a total lack of responsibility for all concerned. The children are the innocents in this situation and deserve to be supported by BOTH parents, not the taxpayers.

To: Marauder

Marauder, you are a good father and a responsible person. As a result, your legacy will continue.

There is a common denomination between crime and male offenders and that commonality is ordinarily an absent father who doesn't participate in the lives of their children.

Of the thousands of criminal offenders with whom I've worked ONLY TWO had fathers who were involved with them. In the hundreds of consultations I have had with criminal offenders, the biggest impact and devastation they described in their lives was NO FATHER. And for the more sensitive or those with an exhausted mother or an emotionally nonresponsive mother, it leads to an attitude of low level of self esteem due to rejection and feeling not being loved...which leads to seeking it out elsewhere, identifying with like...which leads to nonsupervision of children, which leads to small levels of criminality and drug use which leads to escalation, which leads to lives of crime.

I can't stress enough the importance of an important male figure in the life of a young man (and in the life of a young woman, either) and the value of a mentor system to assist to those who don't have a positive role model in their lives.

THAT is the issue that should be stressed, not apologists for the offender.

The majority of dead-beats,dead-broken,dead-broke,dead-sick, or disable locked-up in american jails are fathers.
The last count I read it was @ 400,000 fathers, and many are hard-core veterans/soldiers, and in most cases there ONLY crime was they fell behind so-call child support, and other costs and are locked-up for that.

The military needs soldiers right now ASAP, and we have Ten of thousands of veterans in jail right now. Instead of bringing back the draft , I say give them a ONE-TIME break and let them re-join the service and have gov't pay-off there debt, and in return serve for 2-3 years of active duty. These soldiers/veterans are already trained and experiance in there MOS and military...
just a idea, they did it in WW2, why not now...
Put MEN running these conveys, and the other side will think twice before opening fire on them...

MTS. .the issue is not moot.

I was commenting on the inaccuracy and bias of the system when it comes to the supposed number of dead-beat dads.

1) You only get into heavy debt if you fail to pay or didn't take responsibility from the get-go.

These two positions are not identical, and deserve separate considerations. It is impossible to pay child-support when you are working in a technical field that is undergoing (a) severe depression(s) and you can not find work. Not that the courts care. And a job delivering pizzas is not sufficient to pay rent and attorney fees, not to mention the impression of the fathers technical skills are viewed as less than the best if his only recourse for employment is delivering pizzas.

2) Costs from going to court (attorney's fees/court costs) can be avoided or minimized if you manage your own affairs properly.

I call foul on this one. When the father has to pay an attorney because he has a job and the mother gets one for free because she is on AFDC because she 'has to stay at home and care for the child', the deck is stacked against the father from the beginning. He has no choice but to pay all the attorney fees necessary no matter what he makes in his job, and there is no such thing as an inexpensive attorney. Not to mention the mother is under no compelling incentive to refrain from any actions that necessitate the usage of said attorneys.

3) Blood tests should be unnecessary in the only situation into which children should be born: monogamous marriage. Mess around in any other situation and you don't have the right to complain about the costs.

Blood tests are mandatory when the father finally tracks down the mother and manages to get her served, and during the first session she promptly informs both him and the mediator that he is going to have to PROVE that he is the father. This is a particular pain that females just can not comprehend, and the emotional blow to the father is one that only other males can truly appreciate.
Also, if the mother turns into a raving whackjob after the child is born, what father in his right mind is going to be eager to repeat his difficult experience, not to mention becoming extremely leery of exchanging matrimonial vows yet again?

4) AFDC repayment--what kind of father allows his kids to go on the dole anyway?

See My response to number two above. When the child is living with the mother, and the courts refuse to allow the father to raise her in his own home, the father has no choice. The only way a court will take a child away from the mother is if the father can PROVE beyond a shadow of a doubt (read; tens of thousands of dollars for a PI doing years of undercover work to obtain said proof) that the mother is an 'unfit mother' or a drug abuser. The fact that she has a different man in her bed every year and she never goes as long as thirty days before a new one is living in the house is not sufficient to prove she is 'unfit'. The courts view this as simply her having a 'healthy relationship' and improving her financial status, which is preferable to her living alone -but she still is not required to work. And no, it has no effect on the amount the father has to pay in child support.

5) Interest rates, again don't get into the situation.

Interest rates are not a voluntary commitment, and no one in their right mind wishes to incur them. However, we are not all as financially independent as some appear to be, and as a result have to struggle to make ends meet. Not everyone has a 30"-and-above telly, loud stereo system, and multiple vehicles for the family. Some must make do with the barest of minimums, and if that necessitates that realizing that certain things such as purchasing a liter of soda at the store or even eating at a fast-food establishment must be considered a luxury instead of a necessity, well ce la vivé.

Personally, I do not care what list the Feebes run against a terrorist list to possibly locate a terrorist. But there is a need to run ALL similar lists, such as welfare etc. The Feebees running the list in conjunction with the Social Security Admins recent turning over of records relative to Terrorist investigations should locate SOME. That is why there is a need to run ALL similar lists, not just one list.

The real solution is a national ID. The Brits say it will cost them about $36MM dollars (divide by $1.80 for the # of pounds) Since the DEMS love to copy "Olde Europe" they should support this measure. Anyone applying for FOOD STAMPS (another list) unemployment, Welfare, new Social Security Cards and yes, dead beat dads etc should be run against the Feebes Terrorist List AND those with a National ID. No match, no walking around free to take our freedom.

but refrains entirely on stigmatizing unmarried women who knowingly risk having children when there are no reliable providers in place

Don't forget, the "state" is a reliable provider, always in place. A disgrace. Many young women now want children but don't want men. They're not lesbians but they're sure as heck filled to the brim of their meager minds with lesbian "men-are-the-enemy" propaganda. Fortunately, there's a backlash afoot, and good men are finally taking a stand, no longer willing to be the accused bad guys without defending themselves. Books are being written about the raw deal men get, groups being formed.

Really, it's almost a Republican/Democrat split.....with responsible guys with jobs and love for their families on the right side of the issue and Oprahized women on the left.

they just cannot pay. Not on part-time minimum wage jobs. bullshit. My wife's ex owes me $600.00 a month for the last 10 years. Why does he owe me? Because I supported his kids for the last 10 years. I quote him, "You want her and the kids? You pay for them." He could afford to buy a new truck every so often and a nice new motorcycle. He can pay, but he won't.
