I can explain all of this behavior out of Cruise:
Way, WAY back when he was just a young pup, it was CRUISE, and not the stunt man who ran into the wall in 'Days of Thunder'.
Knocked him AND his common sense way into the middle of next week...
I'll buy the "next week" part if you'll buy a halfway into an "alternate dimension" part.
