The Young and the Ripped-off
It was just about 35 years ago that the youth movement made one of its most famous imprints on American history when thousands of college kids and 20-somethings marched on the capital in Washington to protest the Vietnam War. The peacenik hippies commanded headlines by burning their draft cards and reciting the memorable chant: "Hell no, we won't go."
Well, the youth movement is alive and well in America, but this time the students aren't denouncing war, but taxes -- Social Security payroll taxes to be precise.
This Sunday, several thousand college-aged kids (Generation-Y) and young professionals (Generation-X) will participate in the Storm for Reform protest in Washington on Capitol Hill. Students will be bused in from across the east coast, from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. And how's this for a blast from the past: Instead of burning draft cards, these student protestors plan on shredding their Social Security cards. "Social Security is a miserable deal for today's young people," says event organizer Jessica Colon, director of Fix Our Future.com. "My generation gets the joke that we will have to pay in all this money in taxes, and won't get anything out of it."
On a separate track, another youth group, Students for Saving Social Security, will be pounding on Senate and congressional office doors this week and next to demand a modernization of the system. Olympia Snowe's Senate office will be one of the first to be visited.
What these students want is large personal accounts for Social Security so they can invest the money themselves. As. Ms. Colon points out, today's youth are equally distrustful of big government and big business. "They're hostile to the idea of someone else controlling their money." The polls support this conclusion. By about a two-to-one margin

The boomers are ripping us off, and we won't stand for it.
Like the boomer who owns this forum?
That said....let us invest our money in private accounts instead, and the problem is solved.
I won't feel sorry for the boomers who thought SS would get them through.
Tough cookies.
Unfortunately, the boomers don't support our efforts to give us Gen-Yers some economic freedom.
So yes, you are ripping us off by trying to keep us on the govt. teet. And by the time you steal all the money from the SS system, we will be left with nothing.
Thanks.
I didn't get the privelege of voting for the man, since the first elections that found me of voting age were '88. However, President Reagan was my Commander in Chief for the first year and a half of my enlistment so I think I'll claim him with or without your permission. Thank you.
Hi Heels, earlier in the thread.."thrashing around looking for someone to blame for the failure of an antiquated system rather than working for/towards a solution to a problem that will eventually effect their spoiled rotten carcasses."
Sounds to me like you accused them of doing nothing. And, FWIW, I foster Golden Retrievers for the local Golden rescue. I didn't mention it before because it has zilch to do with politics. I've also taught Sunday School. Again, it's irrelevant. Speaking again to the topic, in my book not working the precincts IS doing something.
And if you gen xers continue to rile a voting force like the boomers in this fashion, I can only say.... "tough cookies" right back atcha.
Well, I am glad you support private accounts.
Now if only most of your peers would do the same.
I was speaking about the comments about "boomers are ripping us off" and "let's kill them before they can collect", etc. I have, and why don't you review, said that I HAVE MY OWN ACCOUNT AND SUPPORT PRIVATE ACCOUNTS. I've even said on several threads that I would support an older retirement date. Nowhere did I say I'd tolerate disrepect. Calling someone "jerkoff" does nothing to further any conversation with me on any level. And, as you said, fostering animals and teaching sunday school certainly doesn't futher correction of the problem. So, what have you done besides work against the only party that might hear you? Doing nothing resolves nothing. On my side, telling you what I DO volunteer for might give you a clue that I'm not a "jerkoff".
Currently I work two full time jobs. Accountant and Pastor. Part of some of the work I do is fostering animals the men from the local base can't take with them when they ship out. I appreciate your service. I welcome your support of Reagan's memory. But some on this thread are not as worthy and are disrespectful.
How am I ripping you off and what will you do about it. I have paid in since 1969 when many of the retirees were drawing from something they never paid into.
LBJ raped social security during his reign of terror. So blame him.
Most boomers have separate private accounts and never relied on the plan being there.
So how do you deem WE are ripping you off? The dems fight reform and it is they who are ripping you off. So quit attacking like thinkers. Are you trying to dwindle your support?
Until this thread I thought you had walking around sense. I now see I was wrong. Go sit down.
There. That's Better.
That's where most of my blame goes. Him and FDR.
Judge not....
FDR created it. LBJ raped it (took the real money and spent it). Every dem since wants to keep it to help keep the poor, poor.
Would you support making SS voluntary for everyone? Yes or no?
Yes. Being 51 I could stand to increase my private savings by the amount I pay into the dead plan. I could retire earlier.
Next question
Given the fact that you two seem to agree with the premise of SS private accounts, I'm not sure what you're arguing about. Seems to me there are enough fights to be had without attacking those of a like mind.
