I tend to agree with you. I bought Giant prior to MS buying them and it works fine as far as it goes.
Spybot I had used prior and still use today in conjunction with Giant. Spybot is no longer finding newer versions than what I have installed. There has to be updates, so that has me little concerned.
Ad-Aware I used early on, but if didin't seem to find much more than Spybot. Based on your word, another look might be in order.
I find RegCleaner to be useful as well, but it takes some decision on the users part to discern what to keep and what to dump.
HiJack This! is also useful for toolbar and start page hijackers.
One size DEFINITELY does not fit all...
Nice list, thank you for doing this.
Here it's been AVG anti-virus, Zone Alarm firewall and the Firefox web browser for quite awhile now. Life online couldn't be any better.
ping for later review....
The first is fgrep, a command line utility from the DOS days that still runs just fine from the command prompt. Blazing fast, it'll find just what you're looking for: http://www.covesoftware.com/fgrep/fgrep.htm
Treewalk DNS server. Why would you want to run a DNS server? Most likely the one you use at your ISP is overloaded and the bottleneck in your surfing. Easy to set up and see if it improves anything for you: http://ntcanuck.com/
What? No mention of Powertoys? Yeah, they're from the evil Microsoft but cleartype tuner alone makes it worth a mention: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

For those who may want to purchase software like Photoshop and Macromedia products, check out http://soft4download.com. These guys purchase unused licenses from OEM's (i.e., Dell, HP) and re-sell them CHEAP -- Photoshop goes for 69.95 as opposed to 600.00.
I completely agree with you. Spybot fell behind in updates for a while, but they are keeping up now. There was a bug in their update system for a period of time as well. The updates work well now. I update weekly if necessary, on all
anti-spy programs, otherwise they are a waste of time. The other anti-spy program I have used is Spyblaster. A combination of all of these will keep your system clean, but relying on only one is a big mistake, as you and I have found.
Great list for later use...

Rock on.
Sweet list.
By the way, does anybody know what the cause might be for my Windows PC having the backslash look like a W with a horizontal line through it when it displays a file location?
It works fine in Mozilla when I type the backslash like this \, so it obviously is not the keyboard...somewhere the computer is screwing up the interpretation of the symbol. It is not a big deal since it isn't causing any problems, but it is annoying....
Wow, great work ! Thank you
Bump for later

The best defense is to use multiple spyware programs.
Every one will miss something. I have found Microsoft's to be better than Spybot, but it seems like every program will miss something.
That said, with Mozilla, I only have a tiny amount of spyware that gets through. And 99 percent of it is actually adware...which I really don't care about that much, but of course I will delete it when found. :)
BTT
Bump for later mooching...
Ping to me
Hijack this is vital to fix some problems....but you have to know what you are doing. When I used to not have much protection at all, I ended up having to run that program numerous times to finally clean my system.
Ping!
