A victory for women, eh? Give it a couple of years for the health effects to become obvious and we'll see how much of a "victory" it is then...

How is a loss for humanity a victory for women?

Under the bill, participating New York pharmacists and registered nurses would be able to obtain blanket prescriptions from doctors that name no individual patient and dispense the pills to women and girls of any age.

Why bother with prescriptions for anything? Is there any other "prescription" drug for which doctors can write a blanket prescription that names no individual patient?

And school nurses might as well just pop these pills into kids' lunches daily. /s

In a heartening advance with national reverberations, the Republican-led New York State Senate approved a bill on Wednesday that will permit local pharmacists to dispense emergency contraception to women who do not have a prescription.

Allowed? What if a pharmacist refuses to dispense them?

The F.D.A. is still stalling over granting all American women over-the-counter access to the morning-after contraceptive known as Plan B, a step overwhelmingly supported by the agency's advisory panels in 2003 and by the existing scientific evidence. Under the bill, participating New York pharmacists and registered nurses would be able to obtain blanket prescriptions from doctors that name no individual patient and dispense the pills to women and girls of any age.

Excuse me, if the feds can overrule California's medical marijuana law, couldn't they also over rule this law?

Anyone know what happens if these pills are taken beyond 72 hours?

Typically, the more effective the drug, the worse the side-effects.

Secondly, a drug that can displace growing tissue by poisoning the growth sites will not just limit its effectiveness to the womb.

Great, I'm looking for non-prescription antibiotics, painkillers, and cholesterol medication next ... what, we cant get that? Only stopping a pregnancy is an 'emergency' worthy of this workaround?

What about when a baby has an ear infection? Is that less of an emergency?

harrumph!

And just how is this a victory for women?

Looks more like a victory for men who don't want to become a Daddy after having sexual intercourse with a woman who is in her fertile cycle.

What is with you men? Why is it always the women who have to protect you from paying child support? You want to play the game but you don't want to pay for the privilege.

And what amazes me is that there really are women out there who agree with this demeaning logic.

...dispense emergency contraception to women...

I have a hard time getting my arms around that concept. (is that a pun?) I picture a woman with a cell phone and a pharmacy delivering condums to the back seat of a car in a remote location.

Why is it that every victory for some marriage-avoiding horny guy is called a "victory for women"?
