ALHAMBRA, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday urged Californians to conserve energy this summer while promoting his plan to create a state energy agency.
He said he doesn't want a repeat of the power crisis of 2000-2001, which followed the state's foray into deregulated energy markets and led to rolling blackouts and soaring utility bills.
"There is no doubt about it that California will face big energy challenges this summer and probably for years to come," said the governor, speaking at the office of the Independent System Operator, which manages most of the state's power grid.
"Conservation saves money, it's good for our environment, great for business and can make an immediate difference."
Schwarzenegger laid out a 10-point electricity plan that includes increasing the state's energy efficiency 20 percent by 2010. It also would allow large businesses to choose their electricity supplier and encourage technology to cut power usage during peak hours.
He also encouraged consumers to take several power-saving steps, including using appliances after 7 p.m., turning off lights when they're not needed and setting thermostats to 78 degrees.
In a more far-reaching move, Schwarzenegger also has proposed consolidating four state agencies under a new Cabinet-level secretary of energy. The reorganization plan is intended to centralize decision-making and improve accountability.
However, the Legislature's legal counsel said Wednesday that some parts of his plan are unconstitutional. Such an overarching agency could infringe on the authority of the state Public Utilities Commission to approve the location of natural gas pipelines and electricity transmission lines, Legislative Counsel Diane Boyer-Vine said.
The Little Hoover Commission, an independent state panel, is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to recommend the plan's approval by the Legislature.

was there anything in that 10-point plan that included BUILDING SOME MORE FRIGGIN POWER GENERATING STATIONS FOR FRIGS SAKE!??!?!?!!?
i mean come on, for crying out loud, can we just build some of these power plants and tell the envirotards to stfu once and for all... dammit, i'm hating this state more and more and is it any wonder people are leaving it in droves and never coming back...?

Speaking of envirotards...they're trying to block a coal-fired power plant from being built near Milwaukee.

Well, apparently it ain't gonna be nuclear, at least not here in CA. Even though President Bush is pushing for nuclear power plants, apparently there's a law here that no new nuclear plants can be built until there's a nuclear waste facility up and running (Yucca Mountain).
BTW - Mr. Inspectorette worked as a welding inspector at Diablo Canyon for 10 years during the construction and startup tests. At times had to be helicoptered in during the protests. He says that it would be the safest place to be in the event of a catastrophic earthquake.

"There is no doubt about it that California will face big energy challenges this summer and probably for years to come," said the governor, speaking at the office of the Independent System Operator, which manages most of the state's power grid. Gov S., you are entirely correct.
Until you build some more capacity into the system, the problem will only get worse.
Now go crack some NIMBY skulls, would ya?

Why am I getting this flashback of Jimmy Carter and his sweaters during the "energy crisis"? Somehow I expect a bit more of my government than being told, "use less energy." If I was drowning, would they tell me to breath less?
Don't answer that.

California will face big energy challenges this summer and maybe for years to come
Today, I challenge the people to use the power that they have to conserve energy
With the weather heating up, I want everyone to follow three simple steps to save energy at home:
- Set your AC at 78 degrees
- Dont use your appliances until after 7 p.m.
- And turn off all unnecessary lighting.
- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger |
By following these three steps, Californians can cut peak energy demand by seven percent in Southern California, the equivalent to the energy produced by five large power plants. Energy Conservation Summits The Governors visit to the California Independent System Operators Southern California Control Room today wrapped up a series of seven energy conservation summits around the state. The summits brought together businesses, schools and government agencies to find new ways to conserve power and shift energy use to off-peak hours, and urge them to join demand response programs. Demand response programs provide financial incentives for customers to reduce power use during periods of peak demand. Flex Your Power TV Commercials The Governor used the occasion to unveil the 2005 Flex Your Power TV commercials which will remind Californians to use energy wisely, especially during peak hours of the day. Governor Schwarzeneggers 10-Point Energy Plan The Governors energy plan calls for better transmission and increased generation for California to give us an adequate supply of reliable, affordable power.
- Adequate Resources: Electricity suppliers must have a minimum 15 percent reserve margin by 2006.
- Open, Competitive Electricity Procurement ensures customers get the best price and reliable electricity.
- Investment in Transmission will reduce congestion, increase reliability and establish transmission corridors.
- Rate Relief for customers
- Natural Gas is cheap and clean. The Governors plan increases in-state gas storage, production and natural gas import capability to ensure adequate supply and stable prices.
- More Renewable Energy
- Increased Energy Efficiency
- Dynamic Pricing/Advanced Metering
- Freedom to Choose: The Governors plan will allow large customers to choose their electricity supplier.
- Research & Development: The Governors plan encourages investing in emerging technologies that improve the efficiency, effectiveness and environmental impact of energy supplies and infrastructure.

From Arnold's message:
"By following these three steps, Californians can cut peak energy demand by seven percent in Southern California, the equivalent to the energy produced by five large power plants. " Why can't we just build five power plants fueled by all that hydrogen that Arnold wants motorists to use.

ROFL!!
That can't possibly happen again, can it?
