WASHINGTON (AFP) - The controversy over John Bolton would not affect his performance as the new US ambassador to the United Nations, even if President George W. Bush is forced to sidestep Congress and appoint him directly, the last person to hold the job said.
"I don't think anybody at the United Nations cares whether Bolton is supported by 60 senators or 50 senators," John Danforth said.
Danforth, a former Republican senator from Missouri who stepped down as Washington's UN ambassador in January after seven months on the job, said UN diplomats only want to know if Bolton has the president's ear.
"That answer is: clearly he does," he said.
Democrats have blocked a Senate confirmation vote on Bolton, leading to speculation that Bush will resort to a recess appointment, clearing him to take the post until January 2007.
Former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, a Democrat who also served as UN ambassador, said Bolton would be weakened if he does not receive Senate confirmation.
"It will not be very easy for Ambassador Bolton if in fact he is a recess appointment," she said.
Bush nominated Bolton in March to replace Danforth, but the appointment has been mired in controversy due to Bolton's past scornful statements about the United Nations and his allegedly bullying manner to subordinates.
If Bush does sidestep Congress, Bolton would become the first US ambassador to the United Nations sent without Senate confirmation.
And just how half-wit?
And we all believe what Madeleine Albright has to say right???
They simply want Bolton recess appointed so the nuclear option won't be used.
Horsepucky!
He will have the authority and the forum. As with any ambassador, the only question is whether or not he'll have the guts to use them.
And we all believe what Madeleine Albright has to say right???

Old Madeline, belongs in the Alice-in-Wonderland (Utopia) story...what an absolute fool. The little old lady that thought North Korea was cute and needed lots of money and would disarm like they agreed.....
Freakin' Moron -- another fine, respectalble memeber of the Clinton administration...God help us.

So the inflated opinions 100 Senators have of themselves doesn't matter a wit to the precious U.N.? Only the opinion of the President matters? Ouch! hahahahahaaaa!!!
I don't care how, just how soon!
He has now joined Christie Whitman's PAC. UGH
Really set the left on fire. Drop Bolton, recess appoint Ollie. hehehehehe
Shows you how far the left today will go to prove their idiocy. And I don't care what half-bright the commie sympathizer has to say.

LOL, I always refer to her as Madeleine Halfbright. That 'surname' is also one I have used some in the past in reference to a former Senator from Arkansas who helped give Klintoon a push into political prominence (a lot of 'Halfbright' scholars running around the country, you know).
Madeleine Halfbright lacked respect and was ineffective in the UN, and she HAD a Senate confirmation vote - what an ignoramous!
Ah yes. Last seen cutting a rug with Kim Jong-il while Mr Ill made a monkey of the Clinton Administration's proliferation policy.
I've been hanging on her every word ever since [koff koff]
d.o.l.
Criminal Number 18F
A weakened Bolton is stronger than anything that Clinton had there and stronger than the Democrat Senators want.
Where I live it will weaken Bush if he doesn't appoint Bolton!
I haven't trusted Danforth since his whitewash of the Waco investigation.
