Fla. officials missed chance to save girl (Jessica Lunsford)

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A sex offender accused of kidnapping and murdering a 9-year-old girl said she was alive inside his home when authorities came to investigate her disappearance earlier this year, according to court documents released Thursday.

John Couey, 46, said he fed Jessica Lunsford for two or three days in a closet in a Homosassa mobile home where he was staying before burying her alive in February. During that time, authorities visited the home but never searched it, Couey said.

"They didn't search," Couey said in a March interview with detectives that was included in the documents. "They said they searched the house, but they didn't search the house the first time."

A medical examiner determined she died of asphyxiation; investigators said her hands had been tied with stereo wire and two of her fingers poked through the bags.

"She was alive. I buried her alive. Like, it's stupid, but she suffered," he told investigators. Asked why he did it, Couey told investigators: "I got scared. ... I guess I didn't want to go to prison. But I'll go anyway. I deserve it."

In the interview, Couey said he sneaked through an unlocked door in the home where Jessica lived with her father and grandparents after a night of smoking crack and drinking beer. He walked into Jessica's bedroom and told the girl to follow him to his sister's house across the street.

During the next two or three days, Couey raped the girl once and sexually assaulted her at least two other times in his bedroom, he said.

Jessica never yelled out or banged on the closet walls to draw attention, added Couey, who expressed remorse.

"I took an innocent girl's life that I shouldn't have," he said.

Couey, who has pleaded not guilty to capital murder, kidnapping and sexual assault, previously told authorities he kept Jessica alive for one day. Later, Couey told investigators she was alive for six.

Authorities said last month they doubted the veracity of Couey's statements because he was on drugs at the time of the slaying. Prosecutor Ric Ridgway has said there was no evidence to suggest that Jessica was in Couey's house for any length of time.

Citrus County sheriff's spokeswoman Gail Tierney said Thursday that "the evidence certainly would appear to back up what he (Couey) says, and so would the autopsy results that she was asphyxiated."

Couey's attorney, Daniel Lewan, also declined to discuss the documents, saying Couey "has invoked his constitutional right to remain silent."

A family member who answered the telephone at the Lunsford home declined comment. He said Jessica's father, Mark Lunsford, who has been touring to lobby for stronger laws to control convicted sex offenders, was in Washington.

Jessica was last seen alive the night of Feb. 23 when she vanished from her bedroom. Her body was found March 19, buried behind the mobile home. Couey had told investigators where to find her.

Couey is being held without bail. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty.

Remorse now that you have been caught isn't remorse. I never heard how it ended for her. Maybe he would like the same. Bastard.

Prison is too good for this POS. My imagination can't come up with anything diabolical enough for him.

1. Death penalty for admitted child molestors and murders. Why not?

2. This is a defective unit that needs to be returned to maker.

3. What the hell were those cops doing?

In cases like these, the Aruban approach would probably be for the best. Even though innocent till proven guilty*, previously guilty offenders should be restrained, till the truth comes out.

Me neither, but I am for letting inmates, who do have the imagination and demonstrated skills, use him for their very own sex toy/plaything.

1) We have the death penalty for murders. We should consider making child molestation a capital offense as well.

2) I seriously doubt this guy will be returning to his maker, I think he's headed in the opposite direction.

3) Don't fall into this demon's trap of trying to place blame on the police. Did they have probable cause and a warrant to search the house? Would you like the police to be able to come into your house without probable cause if a crime has been alleged to have been committed in your vicinity? This child's murder is nobody's fault but this guy's.

I do not blame police for the crimes he committed. I do wonder if they were vigillant enough. From what I've read, it sounds like they could have been creative and gotten a warrant for something at that house. I am sure they are second guessing the decision more than I am.

They don't even mention his sister who shared the house, and her boyfriend, living with her. They knew he was a sexual predator, and (I could be wrong) told authorities later they suspected he had the girl in the home, but they said nothing to Police when they came by during their search.

This crime is too horrible to even think about very long. No punishment would be to harsh. He should be left in a locked room with Jesse's dad.

Have him dig a hole deep enough to hold his own body; tie his hands tightly together behind his back with piano wire; put him into several layers of plastic garbage bags; throw his garbage-bagged ass into the hole; re-fill the hole with dirt; go away.

If it was good enough for little Jessica, it's good enough for his sorry ass.

This guy is the what democrat values are all about. He will be pitied by libs asking us to save his life. Never forget this is the evil that we are fighting. RINOs not up to the job of getting tough on perverts like this need to be kicked out of office. Desperate times call for desperate measures - I am livid that this guy is not going to recieve the same sentence that he delivered to this poor child. Shame on America for not doing more to protect our children and speaking out to kill perverts who commit these acts.

Things become so much clearer once you put down the crack pipe. This guy will get his either in this sphere or the next.

If this man did this to a dog, PETA and the lefties would be all over him.

I just can't get out of my mind the evil of this crime.

This was a little girl who died clutching this.

I don't favor cruel punishments generally, but in this case I can't see anything against it. Tie him spread-eagled to the ground, put two wedges under each of his long bones (tibia-fibula, humerus, femur, radius-ulna) and smash them to pieces with an iron bar. Then weave his broken limbs through the spokes of a wheel and hang him up to die of shock and exposure. That's how they did it in the Middle Ages.

Who can believe this little lying sack of dog doo? He said they didn't search the house. I do not believe that for one minute. He is pond scum and deserves to spend the rest of his days in a dark, dank cell always peeking over his shoulder.
