I agree, I firmly believe that all public schools should reqiure everyone to wear a uniform or a simple dress code

That is the case in the UK in fact over the last few years they are stricter that they were about it when I was at school.

The uniform has changed and become more relaxed as polo shirts are allowed in the summer and corded trousers in the winter but they have to be the official school ones and they even have sweat shirts now with the school emblem on it.

We have just has a big row in the UK because a boy wore a baseball cap to school and he got sent home because the school deemed it was not suitable attire. We have had a shopping centre ban what is called hoodies (tops with hoods) because it is reckoned that they are intimidating and encourage a certain type of behaviour and I think this is where the school was coming from.

The parents are up in arms because they say their son has very fair skin and needs protection from the sun hence the cap and that he never intended to wear it in school but only in the playground. My solution to this one is have the baseball cap as part of the uniform with the school badge on it but make it clear it is to be taken off the minute they go through the school doors.

I get the impression that private ownwership is not as widespread in the States as in Britain especially in the lower income families. Am I right or is it just what I am being fed?

Hard for me to answer, snugs, because I don't know the situation in Great Britain. Homeownership is over 60% in this country, now, IIRC. It's higher than that in rural areas, I think. However, there are definitely pockets where it isn't the norm, and the urban poor would be most of those pockets.

One thing this ruling will do in the U.S. is drive homeowners into mass-produced subdivisions even more than they are being driven now, because those clusters of small lots aren't going to be as vulnerable to the land predators.

I think that it is similar then in Britain I am not sure of the actual figure but it may be slightly higher than 60%. However you have to take into consideration those living in bed sits etc so maybe it is not higher.

Where I live virtually everyone seems to own their own property we have 2 large council estates but many of them have now been sold to the tennants under the right to buy which was introduced by the Tory Government back in the 80s.

At the company where I work only one person rents and that is mainly because he has 2 adult handicapped children and I think that is because he benefits from being a council tennant regarding care and alternations to the property to enable him to cope.

One thing that has increased due to the council right to buy scheme is private renting. This had virtually disappeared especially with all the rules and regulations that now apply but with so few council properties a lot of people once they have paid their mortgage off have re financed and bought a second property and rented it out. Rent is higher than mortgage payments so they can well afford to finance the second property. Other people have bought old properties up and done them up and divided them into flats(apartments)/bedsits and rented them out but on the whole most people I know own their property even those on lower incomes.

Just looked up on the net and according to one report 68% in Britain owned their own property in 2003 I cannot imagine this has decreased so it looks as if slightly more percentage wise own their own homes in Britain.

Hi all....no pics or screencaps but just turned on the Friday night (June 24) Toronto Blue Jays Washington Nationals baseball game at RFK stadium and the President and Condoleeza Rice are at the game in a private box on the press box level. The President is in a white shirt and no tie. It must be hot there tonight but he seems to be enjoying the game and seems to be cheering the Nationals. I am not sure because the picture they showed of him was brief but perhaps Jeb is with him as well. I didn't recognize anyone else but there seems to be about half a dozen in the box with him.

Yes this is clearly an informal outing for the President the way he is dressed...looked very relaxed and at ease.

Isn't Teddy the last of Joe Kennedy's Demon Seeds still alive?

Isn't the Kennedy who was married to Peter Lawford still alive somewhere? But other than her, I think they've all kicked the bucket, except for FatTed.

I thought the Blimp's behavior was beyond reprehensible. How DARE he call for Rummy's resignation, when Rummy serves at the "pleasure of the President". What nerve. What gall. What - well, you get the picture.

And somebody ought to explain to Sheets that they are supposed to be asking questions, not pontificating and speechifying. Sheesh.

Pat Kennedy .. married Peter Lawford .. one of the infamous "Rat Pack" of old ... I believe she, Eunice and Jean Kennedy Smith are the remaining chillun of Joe and Rose .. 'cept for THE SWIMMER, of course.

Eunice, wife of Sargent Shriver, mother to Maria Schriver Schwarzenegger

Pat Kennedy Lawford and Jean Kennedy Smith

Well, Virginia has an open gun carry law. You just can't conceal 'em -- which makes no sense to me but whatever works.

Well I guess I was wrong on the white shirt part but it was a quick take and the lighting may have made it look quite pale. Anyways....Washington is winning so the President seems happy.

Marvin lives in the D.C. area...Virginia or Maryland or some such. So he is more likely than Jeb to be nearby the President.

Thanks Truthy I felt it needed something like that after the grilling that Rummy took from the swimmer.

I loved the way that he pointed out which has been a well known fact that twice he offered the President his resignation and pointed out that as he serves at the pleasure of the President it is the President's call and the President wants him to remain. As the President said when he answered a question regarding the Vice President next!!
