Rove is a master strategist. Still, the White House really shouldn't let him out in public. He's just not that kind of guy.

They took it that way because that's the way he meant it.

Just as he tied conservatism to the Republican party.

But it was a subtle link. They took the bait.

Heads up! Brit played Kennedy's statement AND Rummy's answer. Now he has teased that there was a reason for the Durbin apology! Should be interesting!

I really don't agree it was that subtle, but I do agree the response was expected as demonstrated by McClellan and Mehlman being fully prepared to buttress and document (Mehlman's documentation cites many Democrats' statements).

I just think it looks silly for people to be crowing about "he didn't say democrat, he said liberal!". He meant and said liberals and liberal Democrats.

He mentioned a few individual Democrats but didn't generalize the party, which is what I had interpreted from the articles.

He generalized the libs, and I'm with those comments 100%.

The online left is going nuts over this.
Okay, okay, I think that Rove quotes mentioned in the article are strong -- not outrageous, but strong. Yet, in these older remarks below, which are somehow escaping current notice, ROVE WENT TOO FAR.
-- To voters, [Democrats] seemed bloodless, soulless and clueless.
-- [Democrats] handled 9/11 like it was a debate over a highway bill instead of a matter of people's lives.
-- Democrats lost elections in 2000 and 2002 because [they] were lost in time.
-- [Democrats] fumbled the seminal moment of our lives - the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
-- [Democrats] have failed to approach the problem with the urgency or comprehensiveness that it demands.

I mean, c'mon Rove, have a heart--OOPS--Karl Rove never said even one of those things...Democrat Andrew Cuomo wrote every one of those things in his book Crossroads: The Future of American Politics.
I guess those remarks weren't so outrageous after all. SO, Dem pols, demand your retraction from Andrew Cuomo first, and from Ed Koch, Zell Miller, and others.

Cuomo also wrote:

-- [Bush] exemplified leadership at a time when America was desperate for a leader.
-- He deserves credit, as do congressional Republicans, for recognizing the challenge of 9/11 and rising to it.

Daley didn't realize that his comments would be national news? What brand of idiot is he? He called Durbin to say he didn't mean any harm but Durbin was already apologizing! LOL, even when they are trying to do right they can't pull if off!

I don't think anyone, including me, would be making the distinction between "liberal" and "Democrat" within Rove's speech if the Democrats didn't put so much effort into denying they are liberals.

You are wrong to say he wasn't saying the Democrat party of today represents and embraces these liberal ideas. Also it is nonsense to separate out his denunciations of Durbin from the liberal philosophy he was pointing to.

He still should have known that his coments would go national, I have always known he's crooked, I did not realize he is also stupid!

I like Karl Rove. It doesn't hurt that I look exactly like his identical twin either.

Howard Dean is the head of the DNC...He mentioned him for a reason and it wasn't to draw a line between "liberals" and the Democratic Party. Rather the reverse.

I understand that, so saying Rove didn't say something he clearly did convey is not helpful.
