Translation: Not a close friend.

LAter the boy said something about "the closer friends" sort of gently contradicting the girl. The way I interpreted it was that the girl and N had probably spent a lot of time together studying and become close, had heart-to-hearts and become good friends. However, I believe it was Jayne Ellen and the other girl who were her best friends.
