Democrats Demand Retraction From Rove
Guardian.co.UK & AP ^ | 6/23/05 | JIM ABRAMS

Democrats are demanding that White House adviser Karl Rove immediately retract and apologize for comments that liberals responded to the Sept. 11 terrorist strikes by wanting to ``prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers.''

``The one thing New York has had since Sept. 11 is unity,'' said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. ``To inject politics into this and to defame a large number of people'' is outrageous, he said. ``It's not what New York and America is all about.''

Rove, Bush's chief political adviser, said in a speech Wednesday that ``liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers.'' Conservatives, he said in the speech to the New York state Conservative Party just a few miles north of Ground Zero, ``saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war.''

Rove said the Democratic Party made the mistake of calling for ``moderation and restraint'' after the terrorist attacks.

Schumer said Democrats were drafting a letter asking Rove to retract his remarks. Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., also called on President Bush to ``immediately repudiate Karl Rove's offensive and outrageous comments.''

Rove also denounced Sen. Dick Durbin's comments comparing interrogation at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to the methods of Nazis and other repressive regimes. He said the statements have been broadcast throughout the Middle East, putting U.S. troops in greater danger. The Illinois Democrat has since apologized for the remarks.

``No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals,'' Rove said.

he should offer the same exact apology that Durbin did. WHich is to say, I'm sorry if your feelings were hurt. And in essence says, I'm not sorry for what I said. I bet they would go nuts. That would be great turnabout cause the Dems are walking around sayign that Durbin has apologized and it was a slip of the tongue (in a prepared speach)

So Hillary couldn't get anywhere with her tempertantrum, so she starts sicing her dogs on others.

Excerpt:

Clinton said Rove's remarks don't reflect the unity among New Yorkers and Americans of all political stripes after the terror attacks of 2001.

"I would call on anyone who was at that dinner who is a New Yorker who cares about the unity of not only New York City but of our country to say we may have disagreements about what the best way is to win the war against terror, but we have no disagreements about our unity and our resolve and the goals we seek," Clinton said.

In response, Pataki said Clinton hadn't voiced similar outrage over recent controversial comments from Democrats, including national chairman Howard Dean's disparaging remarks about Republicans and Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin's invocation of Nazis and Soviet gulags in a speech about the U.S. military installation at Guantanamo Bay.

it is impossible not to "politicize' something like 9/11 when there are wildly different reactions to it. especially when, in general, if you are on the left you see it one way, and on the right another way.

really, anything is political anymore.

Did you happen to see Her Highness Hitlery standing beside UpChuck Schummer on demanding that Rove apologize??? Puleeeezz...

If I recall, Hillary was booed by the firemen and policemen at the party/fund raiser held in New York right after 9/11. No doubt, Rove put them up to it. /s

Here are a couple of exerpts from Dick Durbin's web site:

“Mr. President, it is very clear that even though I thought I had said something that clarified the situation, to many people it was still unclear. I'm sorry if anything that I said caused any offense or pain to those who have such bitter memories of the Holocaust, the greatest moral tragedy of our time. Nothing, nothing should ever be said to demean or diminish that moral tragedy.”
“I'm also sorry if anything I said in any way cast a negative light on our fine men and women in the military. I went to Iraq just a few months ago with Senator Harry Reid and a bipartisan Senate delegation. When you look in the eyes of the soldiers you see your son and daughter. They are the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them.”

I have learned from experience that a qualified (using the word "if" is a red flag) apology is no apology.

"Why apologize for telling the truth?"

I think that's what McClellan told them. hehe

"Subsequent events have proven this statement to be true.
Isn't the truth an absolute defense against any expression of outrage?

I don't see the problem. Can anyone else?"

Liberals get their directives from demons.

I heard a woman, the other day, ask, "Where are the moderate Democrats?" (Makes you wonder if they even exist anymore.)

I don’t understand why they are upset.

If Democrats hate to be called Liberals, and don’t want to be called Liberals, and don’t admit to being Liberals…then why are Democrats objecting to Rove talking about Liberals? Are they agreeing that they are Liberals now? Which way is it fellows? Inquiring minds want to know.

Maybe we should ask Kerry to clarify this up. He knows the difference I am sure, he has been both/all/one/none of the above.

The Democrats are outraged because when their people say controversial things, they're just plain idiotic. When our people say things that are controversial, it's because they're. . .true.

Don't forget, btw, that Maher didn't bring that up, it was conservative Dinesh D'SOuza:

During the show, panelist Dinesh D'Souza, an author, disagreed with President George W. Bush's reference to the suicide hijackers being "cowards." "These are warriors, and we have to realize that the principles of our way of life are in conflict with people in the world," D'Souza said. Maher responded by saying, "We (the U.S.) have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly."

Maher deserves all he got from this, but let's not forget one of our own brought it up in the first place.

Not exactly. Last night FOX reported that Daley criticized the Durbin comments, and when Durbin heard that he made his apology. But Daley was on the phone to tell Durbin he wasn't saying Durbin should apologize, but at that moment Durbin was making the apology. So Daley spoke from the heart, I am guessing, and then tried to get Durbin not to apologize--his political side overtook his patriotic side, I guess.

Chase the terrorits with lawyers and take them to a Grand Jury .Indict them in the "international court". The cartoon bubble in my head is that of lawyers parachuting into the Sudan and Pakistan in black face paint and chasing terrorist with their full-auto, tactical briefcases, pulling the pin to throw their explosive subpeonas full of damnable acts and terrible deeds. Wow. That'll show them.

Were I a terrorist, I'd rather be chased by lawyers, international judges in funny wigs, and Interpol than SEALS and "Green Berets" intent on me meeting the 72 virgins.
And if I were leader of some inclusive and tolerant country that's hoping to appease terrorist, I'd hope Kerry can some day be elected.

I don't have time to read the whole thread right now, and maybe someone has said this, but it seems to me he can paint them into a nice little corner by reversing all his statements: Okay, the liberals are in favor of the war; liberals claim Gitmo is nothing like a Nazi death camp; Moveon takes back its petition; etc. etc.

Er...aren't we waiting for the fair democrats to DEMAND an apology from Dick Durbin for likening our US military troops to Nazis, Stalinists and Communist monsters? I mean, they certainly will call for a retraction and apology soon, won't they? /s
