NEW YORK (CNN/Money) When you travel from state to state, some differences are readily apparent: the landscape, people's accents, use of the word "dude," you name it.
But you can't know what it truly costs to live in a place until you get hit with the whole megillah of taxes.

Delaware just makes everyone that drives on the 8 mile stretch of highway pay 123,342,355 bucks and 64 cents each way in tolls. I wouldn't mind paying the tolls if it didn't take me 40 minutes to pay them.

Anything to rape the people!

I hear ya. I went to college in NY. I couldn't understand how a state with an income tax, sales tax of 7.25, lottery, toll roads, and an above average gas tax (let's not forget the arm and leg tax on smokes) be short of money. Recently they decided to raise state college tuitions and the 2 of the local HS's lost funding for "extra" activities like the drama club. It amazes me how these politicians have the gall to ask for more money. Well the people that keep voting these clowns in amaze me more ;)

Well, Maine and NY are New England. I know some will scream that I lumped NY in with New England, but I believe until we get rid of the likes of Ted Kennedy, the states will remain miserable.
Kennedy has a stranglehold on New England. It's time for him to go!

I am glad Florida is on the low end for taxes, Cause I need the extra money to pay for the annual increase in Home Owners, Flood and Auto Insurance.

As a New york city resident and someone who has to suffer under RINO`s like Mike Bloomberg and leftist tax crazy psychopaths like Hillary Clinton, there is no way anyone is going to make me believe that New York is not anything less than the #1 highest taxed state in the union. Maybe they are not counting the RINO scams that are thrown against the people of New York as well? Such as the latest where the mirrors of my parked car are broken off and in the windsheild is a ticket for "equipment violation" (no side view mirror)...Since January this has happened to me three times. I get up to go to work, and sure enough the mirror is laying in the street and the ticket is in my window.

Due to some quirk in claculations, MA(#30-32) comes more tax-friendly than Idaho and NC(#24-28). Strange.

I hear ya!! I live on Long Island (soon to be moving to Dutchess County though!! Cannot wait!!). We are outrageously taxed in this state! Most of the school budgets on LI were voted down this year due to the ridiculous property tax rates and residents finally having had enough of it (the crooks in the public schools etc.).
I am fairly certain that Long Island is one the most highly taxed places in the country. And forget about the city!! EEk Gads!! It's truly the greatest city in the world BUT...Bloomberg's favorite thiong to do is squeeze as much as he can out of New Yorkers! I think he should sue Saudi Arabia/the House of Saud to make some money for the city since it lost so much bcause of 9/11....instead of making the people of NYC pay even more!! 17 of the 19 highjackers were Saudi's afterall!

And if you work in Delaware but live out of state, you still must pay their horrendous state income tax. Taxation without representation?

Massachusetts has a flat state rate, something like 5.75% which, like all flat rates, keeps the rate from climbing too high.
The problem in Massachusetts is cap gains tax. Move across the border to NH before your liquidity event.

COMMENT: Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to
raise the kids. What happened?
We have too many politicians, they have decided that we must be protected from ourselves. In there effort to do that they have created so many layers of government that the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.
Thus - - we have too much duplication of services, and of course services that are not necessary. And the Democrats feel they have a right to TAX--TAX--TAX and SPEND--SPEND--SPEND--SPEND.
To pay for this we have increased taxes.
Also we all have to keep up with the Joneses', so we have to have more "disposable" income. To make this possible unions want non productive workers to aid other slightly productive workers, so prices go up; most of us have to pay for medical insurance but the grocery workers here think it is a right. They are the highest paid retail workers in the country.
I do not object to a worker getting an honest days pay for an honest days work but some things are ridiculous.
Bureaucracy!!! The only government workers overloaded are in Public Safety, Primary School Teachers and those who provide direct services to the Tax Payers. There are so many "bean counters" and "tax collectors" (most by mandate from Washington or the state) that our budgets cannot afford to fulfill the primary services.
How many people in your Community Government spend all their time doing "reports" to higher government or applying for "grants"; to get the local tax money back? Way too many!
Enough, my blood pressure is high enough now!

Kennedy does not have a stranglehold on New England as only Massachusetts gets to vote for him. He is like Biden in DE or name any other Senator from any state with several terms under their belt.
BTW, bite your tongue, NY not is part of New England. The line of division begins in central CT and I include only the North East Kingdom in VT as part of NE as well. There is a distinction among New Englanders that differs from others in the nation especially that of long time New Hampshire residents. It is the idea of personal responsibility and organization, in work and family that is the bedrock of that distinction. The liberals cater to the weak and the stupid and those who would undermine that virtue. Personally I do not understand Maine only in that many of the residents have for years been employed in industry that is seasonal and unpredictable and has for many years relied upon government to see them through tough times.
What sets NH apart is the volunteer government and the volunteer legislature. That is the reason why NH has resisted liberal inroads. It however, is getting tougher everyday.
