I have purchased a couple of small hard drives that were used in Xboxes. Unfortunately I discover that the hard drives were locked down and, though I am told there are methods to do so, I cannot find any way to unlock them for use in a PC.
Does anyone out there have a remedy or is it time to throw them in the garbage.
NOTE: I do not have an XBox.
One more note. I'm going to be doing some maintenance on my PC so I'll check back later to see what's posted. Thanks a bunch Freepers!
Fdisk can't find the drive?
Partition magic?
Throw them in the garbage as they are totally useless to a PC. The BIOS will never recognize them and even if you were to unlock the hard drive, the PC would still not be able to read the drive as they are formatted completely differently than a standard hard drive.
"I discover that the hard drives were locked down"
Not sure what "locked down" means.
If you can explain what this means, I might be able to help you.
What brand of drive?
and
There is a readme with the "how to" in the zip files.
btw - how do you get X drives without owning an XBox? Did you buy them from Incle Guido off the back of a truck? _________________
Trash em.....
Not worth the time to try to make them adaptable, if even possible.
Really HI-Cap hard drives are dirt cheap now.
You might be able to go to the makers site for some support or do a google search to see if someone else has hack them before...
Also what type of interface, ide? and then will a pc's bios see them...
If they will interface to a pc and the bios can see them and its just an fdisk issue, you might want to try Linux fdisk utility to kill the partition, its some want more flexible then MS dos Fdisk...
I do know their are people that have hack xbos's and got then to run as standalone Linix boxes so them must of been able to reformat the partitions
How small is small? You can buy 30 gig'rs for $20 bucks now.
OTOH if you wanted to buy 1 or 3 gig drive, good luck trying to find one.
er, viagra?
Ditto.
Last time I bought a drive was a couple of years ago.
Bought 2 WD 120 gig drives and if I recall correctly the price was around $115 each.
No telling what the price is now for the same but probly a fraction of what it was then.
Run Fdisk, format and you are good to go.
Why bother with something that may or may not work.
Also have an attic full of 50's 60's ham gear. Vacuum tubes etc. Dont mess with them either and for the same reason. </grin
I still have one of the first gateway computers ever made. It is probably the oldest one still in one piece and running.
Understand.
I still have a Tandy TRS 80 and a Commodore 64
Also in the attic.
Tons and tons of 5 inch floppys, old cassette tapes etc.
Real relics....you saving them for the Smithsonian?
When a hard drive is used in an XBox, a program is run whereby the HD is password protected and the drive is thereby only recognized by the XBox. When I insert the drive into a PC, the BIOS & Windows sees the drive but cannot access the drive any further.
This guy at work is selling them. He told me some of the drives may not be usable cuz of being locked but I took the chance anyway.
These files will only work if I have an XBox to put the HD into. I do not have one. Is there anyway of doing it via my PC?
