WASHINGTON -- Two days after announcing his intention to seek the presidency, Democratic Sen. Joe Biden on Tuesday accused President Bush of "misleading statements and premature declarations of victory" in Iraq and called on him to change course.
"The disconnect between the administration's rhetoric and the reality on the ground has opened not just a credibility gap, but a credibility chasm. Standing right in the middle of that chasm are 139,000 American troops _ some in their third rotations," the Delaware senator said in a speech at a Washington think tank.
He said Bush should level with voters about the stakes and risks in Iraq and push to get allies more involved in security and reconstruction efforts. While the address broke little new ground, it was arguably the first campaign speech of the 2008 race.
Bush's political team fired back. "Sen. Biden's gloomy view of the significant progress made in Iraq should earn him the title of pessimist in chief," said Tracey Schmitt, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

Perfect!
Does Biden have a military record?
Has that bald headed chicken plucker ever been near or, better yet, IN a combat zone?
He won't carry his immediate family. Welcome Senator Biden.
Biden is trying to win the votes of the "Bush is Hitler" crowd.
"Can't JB come up with anything original?"
No, because his hair plugs have addled his brain.
Nope, now he's plagarizing Soros and Michael Moore.
The Dems can complain all they want, but until they come up with a plausible strategy instead of some "get all of the allies involved" delusions of grandeur, they deserve not a shred of credibility. I really question whether these people have anything left to offer in the war of ideas anymore. They seem devoid of thought and loaded with nothing but vitriol.
I accuse of Biden of misleading America by saying that he actually has a brain.
I am an American, I am a voter---and I distinctly remember President Bush saying it was going to be a long war, and difficult war, because of the type of enemy we were facing.
He included Iraq in the War on Terror and I understand why, and agree...
I have taken the time to dig through crap everyday to find the stories about the troops furnishing new schools, books and supplies, about the Iraqi Marines taking over the oil sites because they are proud of their country and the want to defend it...
President Bush is a man who gives the voter credit for remembering what he says ---AND, I KNEW before anyone told me that the "mission accomplished" sign on that aircraft carrier was for the mission that the carrier just finished, NOT the Iraq War per se...
I don't know if I can tolerate a campaign speech a day from Bloviating Biden, for the next 3 years....yikes!
Biden will never make it out of Iowa. The libs think he is Bushlite.
I think Biden should level with America and admit that he has been on the payroll of the country's enemies for years! Come on, Joe, fess up! It would be the right thing for you to do!
I hear his speech started out "Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation." He knows how to write them. Of course, there is nothing original about any part of Biden, including his hair.
I couldn't agree more!
Is he smoking pot, or taking Arab money, or both?
...and the Democrats continue their macabre dance.
Well said. More people than you think also remember the words of President Bush shortly after Sept 11.
Take heart.
