An illegal immigrant from Mexico was sentenced Monday to 51 years in prison for wounding two Maricopa County sheriff's deputies in a shootout in December.
Prosecutors sought a 63-year sentence for Jorge Guerra-Vargas, who said in Maricopa County Superior Court that he fired on a seven member Special Weapons and Tactics team noy knowing they were cops.
"I thought they were thieves. I was scared," Vargas said through an interpeter.
Vargas pleaded guilty May 2 to three counts of aggravated assault.
A sheriff's SWAT unit was serving a search warrant Dec. 16 at a trailer home in a county in Mesa when Vargas opened fire with a 9 mm handgun after the unit busted in and threw open a curtain used as a room divider.
Sean Pearce, son of Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, was shot in the stomach and Lew Argetsinger was shot in the hand. Rod Jackson was shot in the chest, but his body armor stopped the bullet.

Good to go...
I have a hard time with cops serving search warrants by busting in during the middle of the night. If they ever want in my home, walk up to the door show me a badge and come on in when I open the door. Or wait until I am out of the house.
I don't think it would be difficult to send out someone dressed as a telephone repairman, set up a camera and watch the house. Learn the pattern then raid during the day when the homeowner/tenant is out. Do a traffic stop and arrest the homeowner/tenant. Turn off the electricity, water or something that would make the homeowner/tenant come out. There has to be a better way that is safer for the cops and the suspect.
I fully agree.
They followed the law, not that I agree with the law.
The Fed's could have arrested Randy Weaver and David Koresh in town and served a respectable warrant on their homes.
After finding nothing they could have left with nobody dead.
Cops serve a warrent like this here and ammo will be fired. They probably will need a chopper too.
I guess the part that really irks me is there's 7 cops and one tenant. No matter what the tenant says it will be disputed and have multiple backups by the other cops. Do they commit perjury in Court? You bet they do. Did anyone video tape and record the entry? Was the word police even mentioned before the shooting started?
I have long time neighbors and friends who are upper ranking cops and they have told me that there is minor screw ups being denied every day in the courtroom. Sometimes to protect the city, sometimes to protect the officer and sometimes to convict the 'guilty'. That is what I would expect, just reality.
Maybe it's the militarism of a SWAT team that I don't like. I just don't really know.
The one thing that does give me faith is that these men have told me they would turn in their badges before being involved in a mass 'gun control' collection activity.
Toro merde.
Good one! I couldn't have said it better myself!
