That throw me then I realised what you call a purse we call a bag, handbag or shoulder bag.
How about "pocketbook", snugs? Another name for a purse. Have you heard of that one?
To: Fudd Fan
I am glad you have as many different pronunciations as we do

Chao bà cái! ('Hello ladies' in Vietnamese)
I know there are mixed feelings about the Vietnamese Prime Minister's visit, especially amongst our Vietnamese immigrant community, but yesterday I noticed the shirt I had on was made in VietNam. Maybe it's better that we kill Communism with capitalism.
My son majored in Asian Studies, w/a concentration in Vietnamese studies (hence the greeting in Vietnamese), we've always known Vietnamese and Cambodians. I've found them generally an asset to the community and good students when I've had them in class. It will be a blessing to them and their families when VietNam throws off the shackles of Communism.

Maybe it's an age thing! As well as east coast!

Good someone recognises them I thought it was another one of those things that are sold to you as American but the Americans have never heard of them. I think they were introduced into the UK when I was in my late teens.

Oh sorry snugs--
A Klondike bar is delicious ice cream (usually vanilla but there are variations) with a delicious dark chocolate covering. It's in the shape of a square and doesn't have a stick to hold it with.

Growing up in Queens, NY we called a purse a pocketbook, only in NYC it usually came out as "pockabook"

Hmmmmm..........no one talks like that in my part(s) of Ohio.
Actually, I've read that north central/northwest Ohio has the purest English spoken in America, with the least local dialect.
Go a bit south, or to the northeast, though, and it's a whole different story.
In Dayton, pen is pin and pin is pen. In Youngstown, Saturday is Saerday, and lots of folks say youns guys, and in Cleveland the 'a' in 'car' is distorted beyond recognition! :o)
(sorry if I offended anyone......)

AND THEN-- there was my grandfather (mom's father) who was born and raised in Pittsburgh. When he said "where" it was "were" and washing your hair was having a hair wash.

Could be. As a Nelson Eddy/Jeanette MacDonald fan, I know the dialogue in most of their movies.
In Rose Marie (1937), Jeanette calls her purse a pocketbook, and her wallet, a purse.
Could be just an old term that's still hanging around.

Yeah - the one's at McDonalds are kinda fake. I think they use some sort of thickeners, and not so much real ice cream. Apparently in eastern Massachusetts (the land of John F'n Kerry and Ted "the swimmer" Kennedy) they make shakes like you describe - no ice cream.
But for the rest of us Yankees - this is a shake:

Being raised in the Youngstown area, I was around a lot of western Pennsylvanians (I lived only 4 miles from the state line).
There's a very distinct sound that comes from the general Pittsburgh vicinity, that you can always recognize. Think Joe Namath.
