...Bush planted the seeds of the destruction of his Iraq policy before the war started. Salvaging the venture will require an unprecedented degree of candor and realism from a White House that was never willing to admit --even to itself-- how large an undertaking it was asking the American people to buy into.
The notion that the president led the country into war through indirection or dishonesty is not the most damaging criticism of the administration. The worst possibility is that the president and his advisers believed their own propaganda. They did not prepare the American people for an arduous struggle because they honestly didn't expect one.
How else to explain the fact that the president and his lieutenants consistently played down the costs of the endeavor, the number of troops required, the difficulties of overcoming tensions among the Sunnis, the Shiites and the Kurds? Were they lying? The more logical explanation is that they didn't know what they were talking about.
Because the White House failed to prepare Americans for what was to come, the administration now faces a backlash. Over the weekend Bush said that the terrorists in Iraq were seeking to "weaken our nation's resolve." But the rising impatience about which Bush complains is a direct result of the administration's blithe dismissal of those who warned just how tough the going could get.
The assertion of the "Downing Street Memo" that "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy" of invasion has understandably become a rallying point for the war's opponents. But in some ways more devastating are other recently disclosed documents in which British officials warned that "there was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action." The British worried at the time that "U.S. military plans are virtually silent"...

Of course they prepared the American people for a lengthy struggle - don't have time to research right now but GWB's Sept 20 speech talked about years, long after his presidency was over etc. (ore it might have been the first State of the Union following or both)
The more bits and drips I read of this story, the more bizzarro world it becomes... The reporter typed up the documents from documents he claims he later destroyed, and attributed the "leak" to an official with no name. And the left is trying to hang the president on this?!
Pitiful and embarassing. Our media really has lost its collective mind...
For the record, I hate these libs and their msm enablers. They will be the death of my children and grandchildren and "blithely" blame that on Bush too.
Hey Dionne, the "Downing St. memo" is a fake. Have a nice day.
Agreed. We either have to believe the author has a short or selective memory, or the author believes most of the readers do.

Washington Post Columnist E. J. Dionne, Jr. Tells Democrats to Stand Up And Fight Back!
A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
If you check out the upcoming July 18 New York Times Book Review, don't miss E. J. Dionne's newest book on the cover, paired with titles by Mario Cuomo, George McGovern, Gary Hart and Robert Reich. In this rarified company, Dionne offers a distinctive perspective on what has ailed the Democrats and what they can do about it. Stand Up, Fight Back: Republican Toughs, Democratic Wimps, and the Politics of Revenge presents compelling analysis together with an inspirational call to arms.
Chapter Six, titled "Why Democrats and Liberals Should Stop Being Afraid," is reason enough why BuzzFlash fans should read the book. In fact, Dionne nails the problem of a Democratic Party identity -- which has recently been defined by its lack of focus and clarity -- with his preface quotation from Corinthians: "For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?"
Take Dionne's position on the great canard, "Was Al Gore Too Much of a Populist?" (which is always proposed by people who forget that Gore WON the 2000 election by more than a half a million votes). Dionne's take: "He attacked big oil companies, polluters, HMOs, and big insurance companies. Does anybody think he lost voters by doing this?.... On many issues, the 'mainstream' is populist." Thank you, E. J.!...
I love how the MSM has even created a programming keyword for this propaganda.
"Is the memo a provable fake?"
More to the point, it doesn't seem to be provably REAL!
"Or has the reporter figured out how to outwit truth by claiming he forged it himself."
Ha. Funny.
"Would the memo writer ever disavow the contents?"
My Magic 8-Ball (tm) says "Probably Not".
When all is said and done, there will be some connection with some person at CBS Evening News. No doubt.
The left wing is in overdrive mode to prevent another FR expose on yet another reporter story of fake memos.
The Reporter adds seals after the fact then destroys the original. That AUTOMATICALLY makes the anti war conclusions of the memo fake.
It is no different than using a word processor to simulate an old typewriter.
Yes, I remember President Bush saying it will be a long war, and it will be a war like no war before
I've been thinking about my own grandkids a lot lately. About a world where the media and the libs have cost us our sovereignty and our ability to use democracy not only to free people but to maintain strategic placement in volatile areas, which will be overrun by Muslims, secularists, socialists and communists. Perhaps on our own soil - and frankly, I'm scared for my grandchildren.
If you read his bio and some of his books, you see a real venom in him, especially on religious matters.
Bush said, specifically in his post 9/11 SOTU addresses and other speaches that this would not be a war/engagment that would be quick. It would take time, be hard and that some victories would be evident while many others would never be known to have even been undertaken.
Now, if I remember that, one wonders, what those who chose to simply re-read the transcripts of his speaches may find.
Silly Libs. Must suck to wake up every morning and be all the more stupid.
He put a SEAL on it?!!?!?!?
What else is there to talk about? Holy frijolies.
I don't think this is something that the MSM is picking up at all. Aside from a few articles written by a handful of reporters, nothing of real substance has been given to the review of this, and none of it in non-bias point of view. There was actual hearings about this last week in Congress, and the only station to give it any coverage was CSPAN-2.
